Ok, this is "back of the napkin math", but it blew my mind.
World of Warcraft.
2 Million Subscribers.
$50 retail box, of which, maybe $25 goes to Blizzard, if they are lucky.
$14.99 per month from the two million players, for 12 months.
$409 Million in Revenue.
This is not a rant, just a mind blowing observation.
Vivendi Universal recently posted its annual earnings. $5.84 billion. If Vivendi was a US company (it is based in France) that would put them right around 325th on the Fortune 500 list. I think it is amazing that us gamers, who probably always have felt like a minority in terms of entertainment outlets, now are creating numbers like this. Recently, I was told that the gaming market has surpassed the motion picture market in annual earnings. I'm currently searching for data on this, but the fact is, we're huge.
