And now, the final segments from GDC 2008. You thought it would never end, but this is it. Tune in.
'Good show!' by animagnum Submitted on 2008-03-17 14:56:35 CST I particularly enjoyed the Multiverse interview. I've been working with it for over a year now and I have definitely noticed a lot of progress in terms of the quality of MV worlds as well as the capabilities of the engine itself. Thanks!
'good interviews' by hallower Submitted on 2008-03-19 20:04:45 CST 3-D voice inclusion sounds awesome. The voice-changing could be fun, too, though I've never heard a really good one. I have a somewhat deep voice, but I'd love to put a low, gruff filter on it to get a booming voice that fits an orc with a bloody maul.
The recording tech is smart, if regrettable. The extensive reports on everything that's been accessed is a great safety feature.
Pixar-style zombies? "Disney taken over by the Hell's Angels"? Exanimus sounds interesting, even though I'm not a zombie fan. Starting a fan community so early was probably a mistake, as it was for Vanguard, but at least they're being smart about not publicizing their internal schedule.
When you said it's a game with "true grit", I pictured John Wayne standing with a shotgun and a foot resting on a headless zombie. :)
'Some interesting issues' by scytale2 Submitted on 2008-03-21 07:31:07 CST Really good to see partnerships happening in the industry, rather than individual self-absorbed strategies that we have seen, especially with Blizzard.
Have looked into the Multiverse developments, but there's still no sign of the Firefly MMO, that people are so excited about. Did I miss a question on this? He said it was an 8MB download - the one I am checking is 456Mb download!
The Exanimus guy seemed a bit downbeat. If I was working on a new ground-breaking MMO, I wouldn't want to have it dismissed as "a zombie MMO". Surely there's more to it than that? He's missed the point, if he thinks his market for the product is purely horror flick fans. Good idea to include "griefers" into the game concept - impressed at this more broad thinking.
'Re: Some interesting issues' by animagnum Submitted on 2008-03-21 09:41:39 CST Good point, scytale2, I was wondering why the Multiverse guy emphasized the 8mb size of the client. As someone who has tried out many of the MV projects, I can tell you that although the client is small, users still must download the individual content for each world -- which is much larger than 8mb. From personal communications I have had with former and current MV devs, they tend to respond with questions about the Firefly MMO with "no comment." Last time I checked (which was a few months ago) they were still in talks with several developers about creating the game. It sounds like they have had many proposals.
