'Wii MMO' by Akely
Submitted on 2008-04-28 06:34:46 CST
Was it not Troy that envisioned a MMO with a hands-on gesture controlled MMO? Way back. I remember thinking "Yeah, I'd try that!" Anyone remembers?

Re the Rant:
The person asking the question should be awarded "Troll of the Year" award. But I guess how the context of it all was said. If pun was intended...

I won't be playing AoC myself as there is no option to pay your subscription in UK £
Currently Funcom want 12.99 EUROS + VAT ...they don't offer an option to pay in UK £ or even in US $ for UK players (well at least I don't think they do)
So 12.99 + VAT =15.25 EUROS
Convert that to UK £...that's £12.00 which is $24 US

I cannot see its worth that much - I currently pay about £6 / $12 for LOTRO per month.

I get the same problem with EVE...since the EURO to POUND exchange rate is so bad it means UK players have to pay over the top.
At least with EVE I can buy EVE time codes in US $ and use them.

I do think there is an issue here....especially with European MMO publishers....they need to give players the choice of currency if their currency is not supported in their model.

I think the best MMO company for subs and how they handle them is SOE
As a UK player I can pay in Dollars , Pounds or Euros.
They don't get too much praise from me - but credit where credit's due...Well done SOE.

'TimeCard Options' by Mezzum

Almost ever bank offers "debit" cards that work like credit cards. They have a credit card logo, and you can use these to purchase game time directly or pay for the Time Cards if thats what you would like to do.

If your bank does not have debit cards (First you should switch banks) you can create a PayPal account, tie it to your checking or savings account, and get a debit card from them (they do charge a small fee but they are pretty safe).

These are two options, if you do not have or don't want a "true" credit card.

Hope it helps.

...but I do have credit cards, debit cards and a Pay Pal Account.
I have also subscribed to many MMOs in the past.
My point really was that some MMO compaines....mainly European companies assume everyone in Europe must want to pay in Euros even if this means they are almost paying double.

For example in EVE I used to pay CCP directly from my Credit Card in EUROs which was about 10 POUNDS / 20 DOLLARS
Now due to the exchange rate between EUROs and POUNDS it costs closer to 13 POUNDS / 26 DOLLARS. I asked CCP about this and they told me all European customers HAVE to pay in EUROs
...my thoughts are WHY - its NOT my currency...so what does it matter ?

Funcom are one of these companies as far as I can see...
What difference to them if I pay in EUROS or DOLLARS if I cannot pay in POUNDS STERLING ?
I am sure many European player that do not have the EURO as their currency have the same issue.

Anyway Brent - sorry to bring this up....just a little rant on my part.
Good show again....and I liked Brent with Attitude this week
;)

...but I do have credit cards, debit cards and a Pay Pal Account.

Good show again....and I liked Brent with Attitude this week
;)

The exchange rate is swings and roundabouts - I think it is perfectly reasonable for a Euro company to expect to receive its income in Euros. If UK people have to pay £12, so what! It's still 12.99 Euros to Funcom. Paying in pounds seems like diddling Funcom out of money to me and we want their launch to be as successful as possible, I would have thought?

Early adopters are less price conscious, so perhaps they will do what you ask a bit down the track.

I have no personal interest in their launch...given that I won't be playing....I don't wish them bad luck however....and I do hope FUNCOM are successful for all the people that come to VW and plan to play AoC.....no repeats of the AO launch (I hear it was bad)

My point is that both CCP and FUNCOM both accept DOLLARs as well.as EUROs...but just not for customers in the EU - why ?
I don't think anyone is being diddled here....except perhaps people that don't have EUROs or DOLLARs as their currency.
...and so what ?...well surely you don't want to limit part of your audience by charging more than any other MMO.
I thought 15 DOLLARs / 15 EUROs / 9 POUNDS was the going rate.
Many of the people I know that play Video Games already think the going rate for MMO subs is too much in most cases.
I don't think any game currently available is worth the retail price + 25 DOLLARS per month....they are just not that good at the moment.

If SOE can allow you to pay in any currency and
Blizzard and Codemasters allow both EUROS and POUNDS - how difficult can it be ?

Anyway end of subject for me.....

Maybe we should have made the decision a few years ago to ditch the archaic pound?

It must be a calculated risk for them to do this and likely then they will do what you say in time, when finances have settled down.

Avoiding testing out a new game for £3 seems a bit of cutting off your nose to spite your face to be honest. If you play it for 2 months and find you don't like it, then you've lost just over a fiver more than you would have done in the experience - a gallon of petrol:)

Regarding "the going rate", I think we should be a bit careful here. Remember there are many who play MMOs, who will pay upwards of £30/month for a game they really like and this isn't the dual and triple boxers. This £10 price you talk about is "mass market" and my view is that the market will stand a much higher price for better games in the future.

Beautiful rant Brent... That whole set of comments were just an enormous waste of human intelligence (or lack of it). If you don't play a game, why rag on people who do?

Also I think an adventure pack would be a great idea for EQ2 but I remember them being asked about in the past. Apparently they didn't end up being heavy on the profit side. Shadow of Odyssey I'm looking forward to hearing about in the coming conference season but I'd be really surprised if they went with something that didn't tie into the original EQ1. The theme for Echoes of Faydwer and Rise of Kunark seem to really appeal to most players.

I dunno I think the initial question was supposed to be a lot more light hearted than the replies came out to be. I think it was just one of those "What if questions" you ask each other for fun.

Eq2 Daily didn't discover it, I did. I posted it two days before he even put it up on his site.

'Will Virgin Worlds have a AoC Podcast?' by Bonehunter

Hi Brent,

I wondered if you could answer a question for me?

I have eagerly been awaiting the coming of AoC. I also have a love of podcasts and I listen to many of the quality casts you have as part of the collective. However, I don't see any AoC casts listed here on Virgin Worlds.

I understand there have been a couple of attempts to cast about this game, but they only lasted a couple of episodes and fizzled out quite quickly.

If I had more time available, I would do one myself - but I have a family and don't have the time.

Do you have anything in the pipeline for casting on AoC?

Like many of the listeners, I am eagerly awaiting the release of the game. It is my hope to have a segment each week on the Travels of Troy, called the Essential Conan, that will talk about my experiences in the world of Hyboria.

This with in the Travels of Troy, I have my first Essential Conan.
