I had a macbook pro 15" until it decided to fry itself for no apparent reason and Apple wanted me to pay almost 50% of what it cost for a new logic board. I hope you took out an AppleCare policy.

Oh and as for the feeling of quality - it's an illusion. The hardware is no better or worse than a decent laptop from the likes of IBM, HP etc. Mac fanboys - go ahead flame me but I've seen through the hype.

'MMO sizes' by animagnum
Submitted on 2008-06-30 19:50:20 CST
While working on some terrain for a game in Multiverse a year or so ago, I remember coming across a site that had a chart listing the size in 'virtual square kilometers' of several major MMOs. I can't find it again, but I remember that WoW and EQ1 were similar in scale while UO was actually very small, which was surprising. The largest was Dark & Light -- no surprise given the marketing around that game. I do not recall how they derived the different areas, but it was still very interesting. It seems like it would be hard to calculate given that a lot of MMOs have instanced areas that might not be represented on the main map, or they have several zones that occupy specific portions of a larger, representational map. If I can ever find that link, I'll post it.

'Mac Book Pro hardware' by angel

I would give woody upheld here. The core hardware components in a MacBook Pro are standard PC known hardware. By core hardware components I mean CPU, RAM, HDD, Optical Drive, Graphics card (post mid 2007 GeForce 8600M GT 80nm), IO-ports (FireWire, Ethernet, USB) and Battery… you get the idea. Of cause the motherboard is custom made by Intel in the MacBook Pro, but Intel and other MB companies also create MB for other laptop companies like e.g. IBM/Lenovo and HP. This procedure is quite common in this industry. The core of both the battery and the optical drive are standard components from a tech point of view, but they are covered in custom made chassis.
I will not comment on the chassis and OS design for now, because I see this from a pure tech view. Never the less both MacBook Pro and PC laptops have many of the same issues when it comes to Gaming, especially when we are talking about graphical heavy games. Some shaders, AA and high texture technologies are just not suited for the relative low memory bandwidth which the most laptops are born with (like GeForce 8600M GT memory bus width 128 bit). And yes, most laptop gamers can live without these juicy details, that is why they are laptop gamers ;)

That sure was a large listener mail segment. Good stuff to. The show lasted just a little over the commute to my new job. Great!

Regarding the song listing:
I'm one of the whiners who really wanted this feature. But I think you actually overdid it. I really could live without the linking and even the time the song plays - just plain text would be fine. And would mean a lot less work, neh?

re: screens, despite what Brent says about how great his MBP is, this on wikipedia:

"Apple has been accused of supplying sub-standard LCD display hardware with their MacBook Pros. While Apple marketing claims that the display is capable of 8-bit RGB with millions of colors, they are using 6-bit LCD screens that only provide 262,000 colors natively with dithering to simulate millions of colors. This is a fairly common process for laptop manufacturers. However, a problem has been noticed with their dithering routine that can create artifacts during the display of gradients in images, which is inconvenient for graphic artists. The problem manifests only on the internal LCD display and not on external monitors.[27] There is a class action law suit underway.[28] "

Yes - I seriously dislike Apple since the above MBP ripoff.

On world size: I'd love to see that MMO worlds measurement. No one could possibly convince me that WoW is as big as EverQuest in land mass. No way.

On the MacBook Pro: Ever heard the term "sum of the parts"? I understand the fact that while several of the mac laptop components are custom variants ordered for Apple (and other laptop manufacturers do this as well), and some are identical (the processors) there is something to be said for the sum of the parts. That being said, there's a more important factor here that goes way beyond mere hardware. Drivers. Drivers are always always always the true magic and due to the fact that mac hand-selected good parts and built great drivers (for both Windows and OS X) their machines are more stable. Add the BSD core on top of that and its no wonder they're so stable. I hear people all over the web complaining about games crashing and whatnot and in virtually every case (Vanguard, AoC, whatever) I find myself baffled because I'm experiencing no issues on any of my machines. The reason? Drivers. Know-how. Attention to hardware and OS details that most people don't bother with or understand. I digress. Back on the Mac front: my point is that one component doesn't make or break a machine. It truly is the sum of the parts and that is the reason I'm finding the MacBook Pro so stable, useable, flexible and sexy.

I am going to go to Fan Faire.. can't wait! It will be my first time in Vegas! yaya...

Anyways, I mentioned Rohan on the podcast a few episodes ago. My boyfriend, a few friends, and I have played it.. and some of them are in the level 50s. ^_^ It's a pretty good game, if you can handle the grind. (You can hand cuff gold farmers or kill them LOL). I love the way you can become a murderer and city guards will kill you .. and your name changes colors. Pretty neat.

Anyways, I can't wait to go to Fan Faire, and maybe, I'll see some of the podcasters there. If anyone wants to pitch in some money for my poor college arse, I'd love you long time.. lawl (just kidding, but seriously).

^_^

You rock, Brent!

P.S: THANK YOU sponsorshiperwipperdippers!

I totally agree on the driver/OS (BSD) concept Brent. I know drivers are a key component in having a good response to hardware (I engineer drivers among other stuff for a living). I agree that the MBP and other MacBooks has some really nice implemented features… I love the new magnet power cable solution, and the back illuminated light detecting keyboard. Really nice features when we are talking about nice to have features. The fact that (a derived) BSD is the core of the OSX is actually a big advantage I think. The only big draw back in OSX is the lack of software, and yes that could be solved by more users or more progressive standards. Of cause you can use the dual boot as you mentioned Brent ;) I think the biggest of all stability arguments concerning Mac vs. PC in that most PCs (included drivers and OS) are created by very different companies. This is not the problem that Apple has. They develop both OS and hardware to match each other and for the most part no 3. Party HW which Apple hasn’t validated is fitting for the Macs. I know now a day’s more standard PC HW is used for the Macs but I think you get the point.
I think the entire Mac vs. PC hype is really a matter of needs and not religion like many makes it to. Do you think a tank or a F1 racer is the best… well that depends on what your needs of cause! I think you did a really good choice regarding you nice MBP offer because you get god stuff from both worlds. If your needs only was on gaming and not on podcasting and more, I would say a laptop with changeable graphic card… or even a workstation PC ïŠ Never the less I actually envy you a little on your MBP buy, the design and feel really is good (, and different).
By the way I really enjoy your shows Brent, nice effort and keep up the good work.

'drivers?' by woody

Umm - the drivers issue would affect stability *if* we were talking abiout the OS crashing. We're not are we? My vista machine hasn't crashed ONCE since I've been using it (which is a while). Heck I haven't rebooted in ages. Yes - of course I've had APPLICATION crashes but that's down to the application code not the OS. And don't try telling me mac applications don't crash - remember, I still own and use a couple of macs (imac and mac mini).

If you're saying the drivers for - say - graphics cards under OSX are *faster* than their windows equivalents I suggest you do some research into graphics benchmarks - example - opengl (obviously macs can't run directx) runs roughly 30% SLOWER on macs than windows. If you're talking about windows performance, THEY'RE THE SAME DRIVERS AS THE REST OF US USE.

Face it - you use macs because they look pretty (which I readily admit they do).

I'll crawl back into my apple hating hole now - and I'm glad you're happy with your MBP Brent.

...to go off-topic, Brent.

Also, with a few notable exceptions, Show #122's feedback column just won the award for most boring read.

As a matter of fact, I don't like WTF - it seems to me to be a bit of an excuse to say it's not really swearing. It's a tribute to the American youth's over-use of WTF that the numberplates had to be changed. I am pretty sure that there are plenty of 3 letter phrases that are not allowed on numberplates.

Interesting show, as usual.

Seems like I might be in the minority here in relation to the people that comment but every time you go off about the technology behind the podcast or podcasting in general I just really don't care. I know a lot of your fellow podcasters listen but I have to believe this is the minority of your audience and personally would like it if you kept the podcast to MMO information and left the tech behind the podcast behind as its not really relevant to why most of us listen to Virginworlds to begin with.

Still love your show. Take care.

I only count as one amongst the many listeners - but I really like the VW podcast and I don't produce any podcasts ?
Not sure how anyone can say this podcast is for podcasters ??...I just don't see it.
This podcast is for anyone that is interested in MMOs...with the exception of one special show some time back.

Brent mentions his problems with recording the podcast on his MacBook (because he is a perfectionist, I think and doesn't like to disappoint the people that listen to his podcast)but then gets criticised for it.
How fickle some people can be !

Off subject but in my opinion (and want does that count for really) the VW podcast is somewhere in the top 3 Video gaming podcasts out at the moment or the last 2-3 years for that matter

Brent - keep it up - if you were British or from the Commonwealth we might consider you for a Knighthood.
Sir Brent of Podcastshire.

Shame - That'll teach your countrymen for fighting back so many years ago today !!

The day a Podcast do not go off-topic at all is a sad day. Face it: this is not only a news show for us listeners. It is also a hobby for Brent. He LIKES this. It's another of his children, so to speak. So off course he'll wander a bit. It's not just business, it's pleasure.

Personally I do not care much for the whole Mac PC debate, I'll never own a Mac again if I can help it. But I do think I learn stuff just bu listen to other peoples experiences and opinions.
