VirginWorlds Podcast #135.3Fri, 12 Dec 2008 06:07:00 GMT [download/play]
The podcast that refused to be made is now in your hands/ears/iPod/etc. After the fires spawned by two completely failed attempts due to technical issues were quenched, the team is a little bit punchy, but nevertheless, the show is completed. Yes, it is a bit rougher than normal, and it's direction is in question, but the attendees are "those guys". Enjoy something a bit different this time around. (Wondering where 135.2 is? Probably cached in a router log somewhere between Minneapolis, Boston, Madison, Ottawa and St George.)
'Wb' by Token Submitted on 2008-12-12 10:21:48 CST Like a bad MMO it faced delays and then was rushed out lacking polish. J/k I remember how great Marc was on that VW podcast last year, he was very entertaining so his new show has great foundations imo
'Blizzard and content' by Gemski Submitted on 2008-12-12 17:18:55 CST I never understood these cries for more expansions in WoW. There are still lots of people who struggle to reach the level caps. Then they have so many dungeons, reputations, solo content, pvp, raids, etc. Throwing money and developers doesn't mean you'll get more quality.
What is also rather amusing is that you are still in TBC content but want more expansions...
'For Heaven's Sake!' by Checksix Submitted on 2008-12-12 20:26:49 CST Quit using Skype! Just use something with a server like Vent or TS or something.
'Cool' by MrGutts Submitted on 2008-12-12 20:36:38 CST Nice job on the Podcast, first time listening. I came over from Massively, been listening to his casts for some time now. I was like let me check this virginworlds site out he keep talking about every single episode. :) I came here and signed up for 4 other podcasts. Very cool..
'Enjoyable' by scytale2 Submitted on 2008-12-12 21:48:23 CST Have not caught up with VW for a while, but it was good to bring myself up to date.
Just on Gemski's comment - people don't just want expansions for "more of the same", but for "new functionality". To be honest I've had it up to here with raid bosses and juvenile party members, but I might be interested in rejoining WoW for some more social content - music-making, creative storytelling, world-impacting aspects, such as can be seen in Vanguard (or at least in Vanguard's mind's eye).
WHat would also be interesting in WoW is if they allowed people of different levels to adventure together, but I guess that is a bit anathema to their objectives.
Re- LOTRO, your guest made strong positive noises on Mines of Moria, as if this were some sort of breakthrough. I would be interested in hearing more of this, as LOTRO became a little too bland for me - too much of the same and combat still a bit stilted.
Losing Tabula Rasa is a disaster for SciFi MMOs in general. WHo on earth is going to sponsor one now until STO comes out and hopefully hows that it can work financially?
Lastly, I'm still tinkering with WAR. It's not been a disappointment per se. It's just a bit plasticky and also suffers from a "lack of realism", just like LOTRO to be honest. WHat its launch has done is make me think that MMOs in general can't cut it any longer for my entertainment. Someone needs to take a leap forward in the immersion stakes - like the fantastic but too bloodthirsty Fallout 3 - and maybe my interest will be cultivated again.

'awesome show' by mehhem Submitted on 2008-12-14 00:55:19 CST This is one of my favorite podcasts. I really like the views these guys give on the news. One thing though, one of the guys, not sure who, his mic volume is always low. I can't hear him at all. It's been this way for the few episodes that I've been listening.
'The Best Star Trek Movie' by xifu Submitted on 2008-12-14 03:54:01 CST All Trek-ies know that Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn is the best followed by IV: The Voyage Home and VI:The Undiscovered Country. Shame on you guys... shame on you all...
'Yay.' by Brent Submitted on 2008-12-14 04:52:21 CST Token on "Like a bad MMO it faced delays and then was rushed out lacking polish." - You're right, but the funny thing, when I listened to the final edit a few days later, it sounded like any other show, but during the edit I was saying "man this is rough".
Gemski on "I never understood these cries for more expansions in WoW." - I should note, I'm personally not crying out for more WoW content, I'm not even through BC yet, but I do think it is a weak spot for Blizzard from a business standpoint.
Checksix on "Quit using Skype! " - You must be kidding, those have awful latency, Been using Skype for near three years and generally have great luck with it. However, Vivox has a solution on the horizon that might be better.
MrGutts - Thanks for coming over to check it out!
Scytale2 - Glad you're able to stop in. You've been missed.
Farspace - That show, it will go down in history as the most painful one.
mehhem - Glad you like the chatter. We're all overexposed to the state of the MMO world, so the discussion is ... what's the word I'm looking for: pretentious. Yes, that's it. :)
xifu: 2 and 4 are awesome and I was going to say that but got sidetracked. I know a ton of people think 4 was a bomb, but I still like that one a lot to this day. No joke.
In other news, I just compiled the initial notes for the next podcast: longest show notes ever....
'@ Brent' by Jmo Submitted on 2008-12-14 06:08:05 CST Longest show notes ever huh? I sure hope that Audacity (and Skype if needed) are much more forgiving than last time. =p
'EVE Players Cranky?!' by Crovan Submitted on 2008-12-17 16:21:22 CST We are not cranky! You clearly know nothing about EVE or MMOs at all! I bet you hate Warhammer, the Internet, MMOs, and puppies! GYYYAAAAHH!!
'Keep it up!' by Sinaea Submitted on 2008-12-22 09:12:40 CST I was highly amused by interjections of talking about the game while you were recording, like Adam saying, "Red red red red!" Maybe it was just because it was LOTRO, but I had fun listening to you guys play.
