There is little clearer than one thing:

A racing game MMO is going to be huge one day.

Here are the reasons:
a) Races are fun
b) Races can be repeated almost ad infinitum and need to be coded only once
c) After football and socialising, cars are the world's most favourite pastime
d) Driving can be duplicated much more easily than sword-wielding
e) Gadgets on cars have sold a whole long list of Bond films
f) Fiddling about with your engine to tune it virtually doesn't get oil all over you and needs coding only once per vehicle designed.

True enough people are usually out driving their car than playing on the computer, but that's because cars are "down to earth, mechanical creations", which are at the opposite end to pixies, orcs and giants on the "coolness" front to car-lovers.

What is more fun than car loot (maybe a new cool spoiler) being handed out at the end of a race as a prize?

Wouldn't you like to be the Virtual Grand Prix World champion and be sponsored by Ferrari and win a real Ferrari?

Ok, if what is planned is MarioKart, then forget what I said...

Would like to express my enjoyment listening to the review. It took up some stuff I've been wondering about and made a couple of great points.

Also would like to give kudos to Brent for airing it (despite (becouse)) the opinions do not match his. It gives the site/podcast great credibility, IMO.

Thanks for this. It is already available on PC and will soon be in my collection!

Re- Darren's review, despite a little meandering to Vanguard here and there, I thought it was spot on, although I have a little less confidence on the game's longevity, at least how it is now. Congrats!

I should have said this during the show, but multiplayer racing games on the console are clearly ok. I don't think this is what Acclaim has in mind. If they announce that it is a 360 title, I'll change my tune.

Heartless - sounds like a rough week. My condolences.

To those with sensitive ears: I forgot to clip a few words out of Darren's segment. My bad. Please accept my apologies for the oversight. I know some of you listen with your kids or at work - I blew it there. I knew there were a few stray minor-curses in there but when I was doing the edit it slipped my mind. I remembered this morning when i was checking out the final edit. Doh.

Akley, glad someone was surprised by the intro! (And if you press the account button, you can update your website URL...looks like it is a messed up a little... put the http:// in front of it... that will fix it. At some point I'll make it auto detect that that stuff. That will fix the external linking to your site.

Agreed people are starting stop playing at L15, ostensibly because of the steepness of levelling curve. Actually, I think the reason is not that.
The main reason is that you can solo all the way to L15 and if you lag to death, then you can just about live with it.
If this happens in a group, however, the whole group will often die and this is generally not much fun for anyone. People restart characters, hoping that the optimisation will be improved by the time their 2nd character gets to L15. The performance in a group is also often worse than solo too...
Thought I'd mention, because you didn't in the podcast...

No offense to Darrel, but I found his segment to be a bit too fanboy-ish to be called a review. Im glad hes enjoying the game, though.

After trying this game I tend to believe that the name sells the game more than the actual game.

I do give props to Turbine for the Founders program. It sounds like an excellent idea.

Thanks for the feedback Sanctified.

Am I a fanboy of LoTR...not really. A positive review does not a fanboy make. I've said this many, many time...LoTR first expansion will make or break this title for me. Turbine has a solid rep for content expansions, so it'll be interesting to see where they take it. If I don't like the direction, lord knows there are other offerings for 2007. It's just that Turbine, so far, has put up the most solid contender this year (...agreed...the year is young).

The IP does carry the game, and certainly will carry it past the 100-150K mark, but again, the IP will only carry it so far if they take it in the wrong direction.

Question. Would as many people be playing WoW if it wasn't a Warcraft product?

I thought the review (or preview) was just right.
Its hard to be too critical of a game that is still in beta....all be it a few weeks from release.
Nice one Darren

Looking forward to the Vanguard review.
Can you do it in the style of the framerate in VG ?
Quick..quick..slow...slow....slow...quick...quick...slow

Nice intro to the podcast :)

I have not tried to get involved in this "Top Secret" project and they way it is described I don't find it particuarly appealing. However, that they have already decided on a genre (racing) and probably the basic foundation makes a lot of sense, in my opinion. If they are trying to flesh out some game to develop within a reasonable amount of time, they cannot really start from scratch with no idea of what to do.
That would take too long time and would be less predictable in terms of resources they need to allocate and manage from Acclaim's side.
Just limiting the competition itself to more detailed design within an already set foundation makes more sense.

Racing is not a bad genre either, depending on what they will allow to be played around with. It does not only have to be people racing against each other - people can form coprorations, run F1 stables, have people working with pit stop, engine and car development, team management. There can be different types of racing, F1, rally, dragster etc - many different tracks, perhaps allow people to build their own tracks.
Racing does not have to be cars either, or contemporary vehicles - horse racing, camel racing, WipeOut style vehicle racing.
It also makes sense to try to stay away from the fantasy genre at least, too much of that already and not necessarily the best genre to capture new players with.

I really hate talking about WoW because its redundant, but these are two totally different scenarios.

8 Million people do not play WoW because its Warcraft, as a rough guess Id say the first 500k - 2 million knew what Warcraft was before WoW. Lord of the Rings is like Star Wars...who hasnt heard of Star Wars? How many people only watched the movies (like me)?

I know the people on this site tend to agree with everyone, but I try to be as honest as possible without trying to offend you. That being said, your words here and your speech portray two different opinions.

With respect to your opinion, I believe that this game is lackluster compared to its competition, but is being fueled by LOTR fans (like you and me) who would love to cling to an MMO with the LOTR name slapped on it. I dont feel that Turbine gives the IP the respect it deserves and brings nothing more to the table in regards to the MMO space (and no I dont have a chip on my shoulder from DDO, even though I really wanted to like that game).

I will say that it is good and I hope many LOTR fans will enjoy it for many years. I will also say that an MMO doesnt have to change the paradigm entirely, but be imaginitive...something LOTR is not. The quests are the same boring quests Ive been doing for 10 years. The button mashing combat is the same . The world is the same. Why would anyone want to pay 50 more bucks for the same game? Because they wish it was something different. Unfortunately it is not.

I don't think I'm being inconsistent between what I said up above and my review (the podcast and the written blog review). I expressed my concern in both mediums regarding the year coming for this title.

Regarding the competition. Are you talking just the 2007 offerings so far...or are you including WoW, EQ2 etc as well? If LoTR, in 2009 (with 2 years of expansions and patches) is still lackluster, than I'll give you that point...but its waaay to early to cast it off just yet.

What I like about LoTR, and what I think they've done right is created a good baseline in which to carry the game forward. With that solid foundation in place, it's really in the air on how they take it into the next year. When was the last time we saw a solid MMO come out of the gate?

Is it more of the same...of course it is, and I don't think, with the exception of maybe Spellborn, that we should expect anything else in 2007....so I'm enjoying it for what it is, not for what I think it should be.

or for that matter vanguard, I saw vanguard had some .xml files. but damn I'd like another game where I could make one button mashers again, like pre 2.0 warcraft.

I'd just like to add that when Motor City Online came out that its failure was probably due to the limited number of households that had broadband connections. You had some people on dial-up some on various broadband ISPs and in a racing game that just isn't acceptable. People quit playing because their latency was ruining their fun. FPS/RPG MMOs there is tons of teamwork, for the most part, that allows players with higher pings or slower connections to manage playing. Also if a company was to come out with a newer racing MMO it could/should be very easy to do one with little or no monthly fee's due to ingame advertising. Yes everyone hates it, but I'm not sure there could be a better outlet for in game adds then on a racing game.
