VirginWorlds Podcast #70 - Making of a PodcastTue, 22 May 2007 22:22:00 GMT [download/play]
The long awaited Making of a Podcast show is
finally done and ready for your consumption. No MMO news in this one -
just details on how to make a podcast the VirginWorlds way. I'm
certainly no expert, but after 70 shows I've learned a few tricks that
have served me well. Hopefully they will serve you well too. Following
is a list of tools and sites I reference during the show. Enjoy, and
thanks for listening.

'Interesting stuff !' by twistah Submitted on 2007-05-23 02:58:39 CST I listen to a whole range of podcasts and I have to say that I really appreciate you putting so much effort into making a good sounding, well planned and excellent paced podcast. Compared to most podcast, VirginWorlds are one of the most pleasing to listen to, technically speaking.
Kudos ! :)
'Alternative Equipment' by QforQ Submitted on 2007-05-23 03:18:28 CST Just to throw out what mic I use, I use a Shure SM57 microphone which is great for vocals, micing amps and instruments. I plug it into a Crate CMX62 Mixer and then plug that into my microphone jack on my soundcard.
You can get the mic and the mixer for about...150$ altogether I bet. 60$ or so being for the board, 90$ being for the mic.
'Wow' by fl1pper Submitted on 2007-05-23 04:11:00 CST Not having a voice for podcasting (or a face for video), I listened just out of curiosity to see how you did it. I never realised it was so complicated. Respect to you mate.
'Other alts.' by Kami Submitted on 2007-05-23 09:44:25 CST Loved the show, i didnt realise how much i UM and EH untill you mentioned it.. im gonna try and stop it now :)
Like QforQ i use an SM57 thru a desk. (Behringer)
Just a quick tip. I was in a pawn shop today looking for XBOX360's and noticed that they had alot of sound gear.
Good Mic + 4 Channel Eurorack (amazingly priced and great for voice over stuff) + Insert Compressor + Cables = Less than £150 (£138 if my memory serves)
In otherwords, if your a novice looking to improve your sound, check your local pawn shops, you'd be amazed...
'pawn shops...' by Wilhelm2451 Submitted on 2007-05-23 18:52:38 CST There is a symbiotic relationship between pawn shops and musicians. I have never been in a pawn shop that did not have a collection of music and recording equipment.
'Phew....how much work ?' by Dathmar Submitted on 2007-05-24 14:59:35 CST Looks like you put a great deal of effort into the podcast, but to be honest I cannot tell the difference in production values between the official SOE podcast and yours - so I would say it pays off.
Congratulations - This was a really interesting podcast.

Last few podcasts from MMORPG.COM sound like they are being recorded in the gents toilets

Now I have all this info...stand by for The Naked MMO podcast (TM)....coming soon

'Don't skip this one' by Shawn Submitted on 2007-05-25 12:48:53 CST I knew I had a few things to learn even after 72 show of my own, but I had no idea! I'm going to point my own listeners to this episode when they ask me how to make a podcast.
'Great Podcast!' by pdecker Submitted on 2007-06-29 19:14:38 CST I've been listening for some time, and I love your podcast, but I skipped this one originally. With the short news this week, I came back and grabbed this one today...
Well, first off, it was very informative, and you got me wondering if anyone in Denver has a simliarly converted warehouse for musicians to practice in. :)
But anyway, I have to say that I've always been really forgiving of many of the podcast annoyances you spoke about, since some other podcasts are really egregious in this regard. Also, since most are labors of love, I always thought it was kinda like being picky about freeware.
Anyway, after I listened, my player went on to the next podcast I'd downloaded, (which shall remain nameless). Then I immediately noticed all of the mic cord noise in the recording, the levels all being wrong, (WAYY high music, maybe -1 db compressed, but voice uncompressed and probably down around -20db), no discernible editing whatsoever, etc. It drove me crazy! After 10 mins I couldn't take it, so I went to a different podcast... and this one, needed... um...ah... editing... um.. badly....
I always listened to podcasts the same way you listen to AM radio - they're full of static, pops, all kinds of issues that you just ignore. Now that you've pointed out how the imperfections are unnecessary, my musical ear now notices every glitch! AHH! Thanks for pointing it out! :)
Anyway, love the show, keep up the good work!
