VirginWorlds Podcast #77
Wed, 18 Jul 2007 05:25:00 GMT [download/play]

Have you ever asked yourself, "What would happen if Brent didn't prepare for an episode of the podcast?  Would he do a show anyway?  Would he stumble like peg-legged pirate on a greased plank?  Would there be any useful information?  Would the podcast suck?"

Ask these questions no longer.  Podcast 77 had zero prep.  Darren from Shut Up We're Talking and The Common Sense Gamer was lurking on Skype so he got swept into the suicide mission that is: an impromptu podcast.  Here it is.  You can be the judge as to whether it is better to have podcasted from the seat of the pants, or not done a show at all.

X-Wing vs Tie Fighter sucks hey?

I can't stand hate mail, but you can't go around saying things like that :)

Sad to hear the ringcast is no more - there is another Lord of the rings type podcast out there, this one is more based around the books than the actual game.
Father Roderick (Dutch Catholic priest) has a podcast called ' Secrets of lord of the rings' . He uses the game to help with a sound seeing tour of Middle Earth. Going in to the lore of the areas he is visiting.
You are after tips on playing the game then this is not podcast you are searching for. :)

For having zero prep I found the show impressive. Not as good as the prepped ones. Or am I being to harsh. Anyway it was good enough for me.

Sad to hear about the podfadings. Brad explained it pretty well over at the Ringcast forums... but still.

Brent, Brent, Brent... not liking HalfLife or X-Wing vs TIE Fighter... Thats like... Hey! You DO like beer? Right? Or is all hope lost? :P

Well, let's see if I can remember everything I wrote the first time.

Diablo 3... It's coming, and that's a good thing. Anyone who says otherwise will be shot on sight.

A horror MMO? Good in theory, but it needs more than one tonal setting. If the environments are always oppressive, then the gamers will eventually feel oppressed rather than fascinated. The tone needs to vary. A theme similar to Alan Wake could work well, with night being dark and scary while day is bright and... well, less scary. The players could spend most of their daylight hours preparing for the nocturnal onslaught.

How about a soundtrack list for your podcast? I'd like to know what some of those metal songs were. Thanks.

Good podcast.

...not much more to say really.

I'm amazed at how many people still enjoy the shootemup genre after having played them for 20+ odd years. They haven't changed one iota in that period either. Tbh, if there is one type of game I would ban for its impact on the brain, that would be it. They obviously promote a "who cares about anyone else" attitude and the adrenalin caused through ongoing play has to be addictive and therefore producing negative behaviour, just like any war veterans.

Anyway, I'm sure there are plenty of people that will either shoot me down, or scientists will tell me that the data showed I was right 20 years ago, but no one did anything with it because the games made too much cash:)

Yes, I like beer. Also hope is not lost. In fact I even make my own from time to time, but X-Wing type games just don't do it for me. Sorry. I know I'm seriously in the minority there, but even back in highschool all my friends were completely absorbed in XWing, Wing Commander and Privateer and I just 'didn't get it'.

Very good observations on the horror genre there, hallower. It is important to have that swing between oppressive and, um, not-oppressive. Excellent point.

Shoot 'em up genre popularity: yeah, it sort surprises me too, but I still like to play them for a few hours each year. Typically shooters last 5-10 hours for me, which is odd because back when UT1 game out I couldn't stop playing it.

Song lists. People ask about this every week and I'm tempted to include that information, but because of the way I assemble the show each week it isn't particularly convenient, but I'll see what I can do about that.

go see the client update for UO? Looks like a very polished turd to me. Them holding back the expansion to complete the client upgrade is not a bad thing. Stop the hate on UO just because you were a EQer.

That's not hate you're hearing. That's just fact. It simply can't hold up any longer. Example: XCom was a pretty awesome game, right? Go play it today and tell me it floats your boat. My inclinations toward one game or another due to my gaming history have no bearing on my opinions in this case.

EQ is going to be receiving the status "polished turd" really soon...so stand by.

Despite brent's obvious lack of taste (xwing vs. tie fighter -- sorry the hate mail continues). I have to agree on UO. Great it looks a little better but the game still feels way way to long in the tooth. The gameplay is pretty much the same as it's been the last few years... nothing really to see hear folks. It was a fantastic game back in 97 - 98, but we are 10 years later now and it plays like it. It's even difficult to play UT1 these days for the same reason. Other than that great show brent. Maybe I'll forgive you for the XWing hate :-) (you knew you were going to have to wear a flame retardant suit for that).

The original UO before the Trammel/Felucca split was the best MMO experience I ever had hands down. I've been waiting a long time for another MMO to recreate that style of game and experience again. Simply unrivaled by the current generation of Theme park FedEx quest MMO's.

I had gone back to look at UO several times after I left the game, even looked at the Kindom Reborn material recently and it's just more of the same from EA. This isn't the first time they've re-skinned UO and it still doesn't save that game from all its baggage. Slightly prettier graphics and improved client isn't going to get anyone signing back up.

A MMO is just like any other service, if you don't give a tremendous value for your customers dollar they will leave. If you wrong your customer they will leave. If you don't understadn or listen to your customers they will leave. EA/UO failed on just about all of those, the majority being subscribers that have no reason to ever come back and I wouldn't be expecting recommendations either.

There's simply too many other current and upcoming MMO's out there willing to do 10x more for their customers than the iota of effort EA has put into UO since putting it on life support many years ago.

Yeah I'm still having issues with that EA! They put it on life support and wonder why it's not keeping up with other AAA titles. I still have to wonder exactly why people play that game. I want to like it but come on... Personally I would have come back for either UO2 or UX but nooooooooo. I hate to say it but all these attempts by EA seem to be just futile efforts to keep the money coming into the game without spending alot of money. Let's just re-skin the client and push everything else under the rug... *sigh*

So other then graphics Brent what makes UO a "Turd"? From what I have heard through all the UO comments you have made over all your shows you don't have more the 20 hours in the game. So what features make it a turd? Because it's not a clone of every other game out there?

Historically UO has been hailed for it's lack of rules. That sounds weird, but there's a ton of freedom on UO and it does seem to be one of those games where only the strong survive. Game play is said to be strong, but my criticism of the game mostly stems from the fact that it is just past its prime and unfortunately there will be no revival. The graphic style of the game and the incredibly clumsy UI is the main cause for this. Oddly enough, a full UI overhaul would do wonders for UO, but it seems either impossible or too expensive to justify for EA. I'm not trying to sound like a D$@& here and rip on a game and I have to admit it'll be a sad end of an era when any of the original 5 shut down the servers for the last time. When you think about it, it is kind of amazing that none of them have folded up shop yet. In UO's case, this fact is a huge testament to the UO players rather than EA's ability to keep the game fresh. On the flip side, I feel that SOE has done everything in their power to keep EQ up to date. Same with Mythic and DAoC.

Thanks Brent thats all I wanted to hear. As from the email I sent you you just answered my call through this medium instead of the email. I do not ever want to put you on a spot just wanted to hear the method in which you came to the conclusion about UO.

And I do agree that it is amazing that the original 5 are still kicking about. But I would argue that none of the original 5 are up to date other then still pumping out more pixels for the users.

Cheers buddy keep up the good work :)

'UO now...' by Psyik

I stopped playing UO back in March 21, 2001. That was the day that EA announced that they'd cancel UO2 in favor of UO3D. I didn't even want to hear about UOX, since it was taking UO in the EQ direction. Thanks guys. That's what I've always wanted...

The really sad thing is that UO's design and engine aren't past their prime yet. The graphics and the interface are, but those are upgradeable. The whole "top down" view isn't outdated, and I'm looking forward to many more games that use it in the future.

It's just that this new client is so poorly conceived. It's a free client, so everyone can get it. It was EA's chance to really revitalize the game. It's not an expansion. No one has to pay for anything, so there's no reason not to get it. Hell, you can even call it a patch and force it. With minimal rebalancing, and a client that was at least on par with Diablo 2's, so much could be done. Redesign the map a bit (make it bigger), put all that on a new server, and whoa... You're starting to open doors that might even tempt me!

But no. They just decided to slap a fresh coat of paint on it and call it a day. What a waste...

P.S. Actually Brent, I still think XCom is a great game. I wish that XCom Genesis had been finished so we could have old-school XCom with modern graphics, but I'm still content with it. Hell, I like the original XCom and Terror from the Deep more then Apoc and these new UFO games. I also still play Master of Orion 2 and Master of Magic. It's not about the graphics, it about having gameplay that has yet to have been surpassed or duplicated.
