'Yes we did' by Dathmar Submitted on 2007-09-10 06:04:58 CST Nice to hear from you again.
'Welcome Back ' by brackishwater Submitted on 2007-09-10 17:11:36 CST I loved the economists outlook. The fact that he sees MMO worlds as alternate worlds rather than virtual just made me smile.
Think that guy from White Wolf is going to regret saying that they are looking for just about every level programmer? $10 says his mailbox is absolutely packed right now.
How did you guys feel when you heard that guy from Icarus?
Do you think that the availiablity if that toolset will dilute the quality and legitimacy of Virtual Worlds and MMOs?
About halfway through right now but sounds like you had a great time Brent. Good to have you back.
'great episode' by hallower Submitted on 2007-09-10 17:13:30 CST Some great interviews, and with folks I probably wouldn't have heard otherwise.
Haro stopped by my site to remind me that his name is "Sulka" and not "Sulake". Sulake is the name of the company. I'm glad you made the same mistake, 'cause now I don't feel so bad. ;) Luckily, it's easier to go back and edit a blog than a podcast.
I think we were both just tired.
'Back with a vengeance' by Bman Submitted on 2007-09-11 10:47:39 CST Great show for your return to podcasting! I was particularly impressed by David Perry, who gave a great interview and sounds much less out of his mind now. :) Hearing Mark Jacobs totally shut down Raph Koster was pretty awesome too; excellent choice of clips from that panel.
I hope you told the Colony Studios guy that their website still sucks.
'So big it needed two bites' by scytale2 Submitted on 2007-09-11 14:06:46 CST An interesting and Epic podcast in many senses.
There clearly is an animosity between Raph and the boring guys that run the "traditional" MMOs, who just spout the same old predictable stuff, talking about revenue rather than playerbase. You can't tell me that there isn't a "free to play" revenue model that WoW could have used and exposed their game to many more people.
Having heard the whole podcast, it is worrying that people "fall" into running MMOs. It's no real surprise that we get little originality under these circumstances, so much so, that they have to "ask the audience" for a concept. It's hardly very hard to come up with a winning concept in this hugely open market there is out there at the moment.
It's a shame that there aren't more Raphs about teasing, cajoling, cheesing off, wheedling and, I hope, ultimately changing the face of the on-line multiparticipant experience.
'VOIP tech' by Talyn Submitted on 2007-09-12 13:19:08 CST One comment regarding Brent's comment regarding Vivox and licensing VOIP vs. creating proprietary: Brent said "I'm looking at you Blizzard, I'm looking at you Turbine" but should have replaced Turbine with NCSoft / Destination Games who created their own VOIP for Tabula Rasa. Turbine, on the other hand, licences their VOIP from Gamespy.
'Animosity?' by Raph Submitted on 2007-09-13 15:58:49 CST Nah, there's no animosity. In fact, Mark & I were having drinks together the first night of the show. We're all old friends.
Besides, I shut him down, not the other way around. ;)
'Raph is right' by Brent Submitted on 2007-09-13 16:09:06 CST It's true many of the seemingly heated exchanges that took place between Mark and Raph were as much for entertainment value as for good information. Mark even said this out in the hall after the show - they like to stir it up a little. I'll also back up Raph on this: he did a ton of 'shutting' people down on that panel, the man came prepared, that much was clear.
On the earler comment regarding voice technology being outsourced - I stand corrected - I spoke too quickly there. Thanks for the clarification.
'vox for podcasters' by QforQ Submitted on 2007-09-14 01:04:24 CST You mentioned how great VOX could be for podcasting but you didnt really get into if they plan on making it available to the public outside of video games. Are they going to make their own client, how can podcasters use it, and where can I get it? DETAILS PLZ
'Great conference and great podcast' by DamianoV Submitted on 2007-09-16 12:09:32 CST I just wanted to stop in and offer my thanks to you for making this year's AGDC an even better experience for me... much like you, having some people I knew and could hook up with made it an even more worthwhile event.
I do wish it was permitted to share more of the audio from the various sessions... some of it was absolutely great, both informative and entertaining. Much of it is available at the GDC organizers website, I suppose ($7.95 per session, tho... /sigh). Such is life, I guess.
On a final note, I'm really looking forward to seeing where you go with VirginWorlds over the next year (or was it four)...
