The Drone Bay Pilot Episode
Wed, 27 Feb 2008 16:02:00 GMT [download/play]

After a long day of recording and fumbling through Audacity, the pilot episode of The Drone Bay Podcast is complete!  Yaaaay!  Big, big thanks to AlienHand and Exekias for a lot of the music bed tracks this week, and in weeks to come.  I'll give you guys a proper thanks on the air next time, I promise!  Thanks to Shadi Mallak for the podcast logo. Also, big thanks to Blinky, Urban, and Brent for putting up with my incessant questions about how this is done.  Finally, thanks to CK and Al for being awesome co-hosts.  Here's to many more!

-Mr. C

Crovan, CrazyKinux, and Alsedrech (no website yet!) introduce themselves and the podcast.

Alsedrech provides us with a first-hand perspective of life as a noob in EVE in 'Diary of a Noob'.

The guys discuss the learning curve of EVE. Is it too steep?

Crovan has a go at forum whiners in NoobRage.

In the out of game EVE section, CrazyKinux talks about player meets and the EVE community, and a bit of in-game news is thrown out.

The viewer response section for this week involves finding out what you always wanted to know about EVE but were afraid to ask, as well as what your thoughts are on Ambulation.

In the non-EVE section (right at the end for you EVE purists), the guys discuss what games they are anxious (in every sense of the word) for in 2008.

Contact info for the Drone Bay team is as follows:

Episode Zero Discussion Thread

I've always believed that no matter how polished a tutorial CCP will ever make for Eve, it can never cover what new players really need to learn about Eve, and that's the community. How to find it, navigate it, and interact with it. It's not over the complexity of the controls that people leave. And it's good to see that here.

Of course once you find a place for yourself, game mechanics become pretty important. So it's good to see that here, too. And I can't wait to hear more on both in the future.

And with that in mind, I have two requests for your listener response; one for each aspect of Eve.

Community. It's hard for new players to find their way in Eve, but there are player corporations out there dedicated to helping newbies. I genuinely don't know much about them (I know of Eve University and I've heard of Agony Unleashed). And while I'm past needing them, I believe Eve players should know about them so they can point new players in the direction of corps that exist to help.

Mechanics. I've found myself flying a lot of interceptors lately, and more then anything else, I'm finding drones are the biggest thorn in my side. Can you throw down some knowledge on how to deal with the little buggers?

(I was just going to ask about the school corps, but given the podcast's name, I couldn't resist).

Also, I see what's going here. MC and Canadians everywhere. I bet Darren's in on this too...

I've been playing for about 2 months. How about an interview with a total noob like me?

Btw - Great podcast !

Suggestions off topic: Sci-fi movies (old/new) or series? Fx. FireFly (What happened? Why only one season?) .. etc. ...

Keep up the good work. Shall be waiting for the next release :D

Congrats on your pilot episode guys!

I was thoroughly impressed. The audio quality was really good, especially so for a first recording, you have a nice mix of hosts from different walks of EVE and you seem to be working well together already. Not to mention, you pulled out 90 minutes of worthwhile discussion while largely leaving the news coverage to Urban and Blinky on WDA.

I am now happily subscribed to 2 EVE podcasts, keep up the good work!

I got a chuckle out of some of your comments. I have a relatively long history with WoW (and plan on continuing it for the foreseeable future) and so far I've liked EvE. I didn't expect EvE to be a theme park MMO, but I admit that that scale and the lack of training wheels was a bit intimidating at first. But since I'm partially an Explorer (Bartle-wise), the lack of training wheels was the prod I needed to get on with exploring.

Sure, I did quickly wander into low-sec space and got a lesson or two on what it meant. But I didn't mind. I made a mistake, and there were consequences. Cause and effect. I can understand that. Not long after that I had recouped my losses and was busy doing risk analysis on trade routes and other sources of income. And I'm gradually expanding my sphere of knowledge. And I'm having fun doing it.

If one thinks that the theme park style is the One True Way of MMORPGs, then Eve is indeed scary, obscure and hostile. But if you're willing to switch mindsets and not worry about what you "should" be doing and just do what you like.. then EvE will be great.

I think it's a bit loud compared to your conversation, i got a bit distracted by it.

Congrats on your pilot episode. I really enjoyed it, and it's always good to see the trend of "EVE Podcasts" slowly become one of the principle exports of Canada ;P

Anyway, keep up the good work.

(P.S. you guys and blinky/urban should have a brennevin drinking contest hehe)

Great pilot guys -I geniunely enjoyed it and even got a good chuckle.

Voice & sound was pretty good overall (although one or two background tracks could be toned down a little during conversation).

It's great to see you guys focus less on your personal lives/work & more on actual Eve related content! I don't mind a little RL banter but best to keep it to a bare minimum if any.

I also applaud bringing in Eve players to discuss aspects of the game -like the case of Eve Bank. It's a great way to flesh out the issues and get to the nitty gritty of it all -and certainly more informative than the forums on many occassions.

Obviously it's important to make clear any conflicts of interest, but I would be curious to hear more about your personal wheeling & dealing in the Eve market/finance sector.

Anyway, I think there's a definite need for the type of content you cover in the Eve podcast community -may there be many more to come.

I've loaded your podcast onto my Ipod to listen onto my way to work (and back home) and guys, great job.

I like the drone bay concept - especially with a noob on board, it will surely help new players coming in the great universe that is eve-o.

And yes, thanks for not being the only one that think torps got a boost. I use to think I wasted my sps in Torpedoes V and caldari BS V... Now they pwn. Nothing can tank the new torps, I can finally reach the 1100dps on my raven in pvp and rival with my friend's neutron megatrons / gank-a-geddons :))

I'm looking forward to the next podcast;

Cartboard Box

ps: Tree, i'll see you on the 28th :)

Sounds great guys.... even if I'm angry at putting my ISK on MC in the tourney...

You'd think I'd learn. As much as I agree specializing is the way to go... I can't do it, unless you consider flying every cruiser or smaller ship well to be specialized?
