No Prisoners, No Mercy
Host: Julie Whitefeather & Frances Kosac
There comes a time, friends, when your favorite MMO ceases to sparkle, when even new videogames lose their luster, and the computer room becomes a prison; and all that is left are two gamers (who happen to be nuns) with a very large axe to grind. Come join Julie Whitefeather and Frances Kosac as they go to War - and along the way discuss the events of the week in the MMO industry.

Thanks for the show. I've re-rolled again to Badlands order where my friends originals mains are, they are all coming back to the game now their server is populated.

Again, an entertaining show. And I enjoyed to "shoot-out" with Saylah. I remember seeing the Youtube Paul Barnett was referring to where he scolded another employee, basically saying here are the problems, and you intend to fix them. I could see at the time that they were joking about the scolding, but were serious about their intentions to fix the problems. I saw the humor and sarcasm in the video. I guess doesn't surprise me that people didn't though, but the follow-up "pie" episode where the employee gets his "revenge" on Paul was hilarious. And this is why I like Paul Barnett.

@Token: Well then, welcome to badlands. I am afraid the guild I am in that was once quite active still has me feeling like the Omega Goblin most evenings - but that is just my destruction character. I spend most of my time on the alliance...oops...order side on the Iron Rock Server (I believe that is currently the most populated server). The characters I have been playing lately are my Knight of the Blazing Sun named "Joanne Darque", My dwarven slayer (level 12) named "Thunnda" and my White Lion named Erzuli (and a pet lion named after my recently deceased dog).

My highest level character is still my goblin shaman who is level 35 but even thought I was getting in to battlegrounds I was still getting masacred so I went back to the order side for awhile.

The third installment of the Paul Barnett interviews on Life, the Universe and Man-dolls" has been edited and will be on the next show The Scott Hartsman interview went well and...if Fran and I can scrounge up the money somewhere (a big if this week) we will be at Games Day Chicago this weekend.

@ Seritaph: If you liked the pie episode Paul Barnett spoke about, you will really enjoy the third part of the interview. For me, at least, that was my favorite part...

I noticed it at the end of the show and couldn't believe that I said it. Geez. LOL Thanks again Sisters, I always enjoying chatting with you. Pew-Pew.

In either this podcast or the previous, Fran was talking about the extent of Julie's gaming history, at which point Julie blurts out "Zork." And at first I chuckled thinking, what a funny word to say...and then I remembered! She's talking about the Infocom text adventure! I can't even recall how many hours I lost to playing Zork on my Radioshack TRS-80 model I computer WAAAAAY back in the day. Anyway, I thought it was worth mentioning.

Yep, I knew what she meant only because Tipa at West Karana had posted about an update to some game called Zork and I went to check it out. Yes, if I'd known about gaming back then I'd have ruined my life. :-)

'Zork' by Julie

Yes it wasn't a belch, nor is it the nickname for one of our pets...its an early text based game. The subject at the time was how long I have been playing games, and I blurted out zork as the earliest game I remember playing that wasn't powered by pen and paper or small figurines.

There was another game I played back when computers only had amber screens and it was played on a mainframe at a college in the wee hours of the morning. It was nearly text based (very crude, very small images) and it was a multiplayer space combat game...think of a very early Eve Online, 2-d and mostly text.

'Excellent podcast!' by Faencorch

This comment isn't about this particular episode. I've been listenting since the beginning and I'd just like to thank you for producing this podcast. It is, by far, my favourite podcast of the many podcasts out there. I love sister Julie's wit and humorous expressions and I can't help but laugh when I hear sister Fran's infectious laughter.

This is an entertaining and intelligent show and I can't wait for each new episode. Guests ranging from Paul Barnett to Emma Loyd. I love it.

My game of choice (LOTRO) isn't covered as often as some games but I would still listen if the topic of discussion was earthworms or sawdust.

Thanks!

'More Zork' by Seritaph

@ Saylah: Yeah I have an account on the new Zork. It's a web browser, kill monsters, collect treasure, upgrade your gear kind of game. A little different from its predecessor which was more an exploration, solve the puzzles game. Like an early MYST, text only though. The new Zork is still fun, but I wish I had a little more control over how the battles played out. Do you want to attack this monster? Yes. Sit back and pray that the gods of random numbers favor you.

The thing I liked about Infocom games is even though they were all text based adventures, they were brilliantly written. And they had different genres, like in Deadline your goal was to solve a murder mystery, or Infidel you were an archeologist exploring ancient Egyptian ruins, or in Leather Goddesses of Phobos you were the hero in a pulpy Buck Rogers comic book story. They even joined up with Douglas Adams to make an adventure based on Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Just like a good book, it swept you away into another reality. I think my favorite was Planetfall, and I think I actually cried when Floyd (a childlike robot companion) had to sacrifice himself to save the mission.

Wow, one tiny work (Zork) sparked a flood of memories. Sorry for taking over. I hand the comments section back to the other listeners. :D

@ Faencorch: Thanks for finally breaking your silence. Comments like yours are what keep us going. While I am sorry we don't cover much in the way of Lotro we have now considered doing something about earthworms and saw dust.

Upcoming guests are Paul Barnett (the third part of the interview series), Keen from Keen and Graevs (on the next show), Tipa from West Karana along with Saylah (a future show already recorded) and Scott Hartsman (schedule for show 41 already recorded).

@ Seritaph: Wow...all that out of one word very briefly mentioned in the background. I should utter small words like that more often. It sounds like you need to be on the show to talk about infocom games. How about it?

Just dropping to note to say how much I enjoyed Podcast 39. That was flat out excellent listening for anyone with an interest in MMO, and very interesting for someone that followed Warhammer from beta to present. Now, I look forward to the future podcasts, and catching up on some old ones.

I think Saylah's idea (jumping servers as easily as in GuildWars) might have saved Warhammer about 300k in lost accounts.

@Seri - Yep, I played it a bit after the mention by Tipa. It was interesting. i too wished a bit more control over the combat. It's something like but more graphical in nature than Harry Potter Online which is essentially a MUD implementation but has a large following and is surprisingly fun, assuming you have an imagination.

The down side of the latest patch is that it hasn't improved the Shaman class one wit. Still being one shotted in battlegrounds...still being teleported away from fortress battles. If I am teleported away from fortress battles do I get a discount on the monthly fee?

I think I should.

'Classes' by Token

I'm not in Tier 4 yet so have to take your word for it on the Shaman, I can't decide what class to play right now and may not renew because of it. I'm not a huge fan of class archtypes and rock paper scissors gameplay, but Warhammer sold me on it's range of interesting looking classes. It's all falling down now though and I feel suffocated by my archtype.

I first made a Warrior Priest up to 28, the experience was too stressful for me to be fun. I could keep up with healing and do no damage, or harrass people ineffectively and do very little healing. I kept thinking how much better things would be if I could just roll a real healing or dps class.

In tier 1 my Shadow Warrior was wonderful, maybe it was overpowered or just overpowered in the hands of a veteran PvP Hunter. I saw plenty of Legolas wannabes getting hacked to peices while I scooped all the kills and renown, I had to play out of my skin but it was always fun and rewarding, if I made a mistake I would die but if I didn't make a mistake I could rule. This is how I like my games to play, this is how I play TF2, how I played WoW, and PlanetSide. Unfortunately my shadow warrior is a shadow of his former self at 22, the experience is miserable. There are classes I can harrass and classes that arnt even worth harrassing... and thats about it.

'No Class' by Julie

@ Token: Well some would say I have no class...others would disagree.

Still let me say this about that.

In Tier 4, another problem has arisen on the Badlands server (the one where I am in tier 4). While some evenings the warbands are quite enjoyable. The last few nights the keep battles got to the point where the frame rate per second went down so far it was like a slide show...and a very slow slide show at that. The lesson is, popularity isn't always what it is cracked up to be and if you are going to promise folks enormous battles you had best be able to deliver. As far as warrior priests are concerned they seem a bit on the weak side I will agree - I didn't like mine and deleted her. The shaman are not the best healing class but that is not why I play it. I play it simply because I enjoyed the way they did goblins. I had considered rolling up a squig herder but just like in the tabletop game they are pretty squishy.

If you want durability the best class I have found for that so far is the knight of the blazing sun. With the proper talismans in the proper armor with the proper stats a knight of the blazing sun can take a licking while the rvr points keep on ticking.

A last word of advice. If you can't decided on what class to play try them all (I have one by one and still working on it) What is the rush to get to Tier 4 anyway. Heck Tier one is really jumping on the Iron Rock server. So much so in Nordland that people are constantly bemoaning leveling out of it.

Also, if you don't like a "legolas" derivative named roll up on Phoenix Throne the only roleplay server. It's a lower population server but you wont see "legolas" anything. This is one time you can't have your cake and eat it too.

I will have to ask my friends in tier 4 how they cope with the framerate issue, I havent heard them mention it so it's possible they found a solution. One idea I can think of is forcing the game to best performance using the nvidia or ati control panel in windows.

I rolled a Chosen last night on Phoenix Throne with a healbot friend and thought the experience was ok so far, looking forward to the next session. The advantage of rolling a Chosen is that I know exactly what they can do as Destro are not shy of using them in scenarios. I also rolled a Witch Hunter upto lvl 9 and am quite enjoying ambushing people and running away, always avoiding damage. I would like to believe that Witch Hunters continue to be viable later on.

@ Everyone who listens to the show

From time to time we venture into WoW news. Fran, as you all know, actively plays Wow. My account, however, is in what Paul Barnett dubbed Parking Fee status on our show. Fran has been trying to entice me back to WoW and made me an offer that "I can't refuse". I don't know if its good or bad.
