No Prisoners, No Mercy
Host: Julie Whitefeather & Frances Kosac
There comes a time, friends, when your favorite MMO ceases to sparkle, when even new videogames lose their luster, and the computer room becomes a prison; and all that is left are two gamers (who happen to be nuns) with a very large axe to grind. Come join Julie Whitefeather and Frances Kosac as they go to War - and along the way discuss the events of the week in the MMO industry.

Episode 41 Discussion Thread

'I am loving it' by Pufnstuf

I love your 'this is somewhere between episode 41-45.' Just awesome!

Are you really training freighter as you mentioned you were looking into? I have not seen you on EvE lately but freighter would be a very fun thing to fly and so rare... You could do some amazing courier missions. Let me know if you ever want to do some missions or probing. I am skilling that up nicely.

By the way I must be living under a rock (warm and cozy nevertheless). I never heard of either of your interviewees though I did thoroughly enjoy both. I even still play everquest 2 but just never knew the names of the developers.

Thanks again for putting on such entertaining podcasts and all your hard work.

@ Pufnstuff: The reason, as given in the podcast, for the "somewhere between show 41 and 50" sort of comments is because when interviews go long (Paul Barnett talked for 2 hours straight) we divide up the interviews by subject and then edit that. At any given time we are usually working on 2 to 3 podcasts and in the process of setting up guest appearances as well.

Scott Hartsman? (his real name...I have no idea why so many people use psuedonyms). Well he is one of the creative genius' that brought us the great game of Everquest. It was his live team that turned that game around and made it a success and, as we mentioned on the show, was voted in 2008 by Beckett Massive Online Gamer Magazine as one of the most 20 influencial people in video game development. He will return next week for part 2 of the interview (already recorded).

Total Buscuit (not his real name obviously) is the hosts of several live shows, most notable the host of the long running "Blue Plz" show. He took a bit of time at the end of his interview to comment on this weeks "Mad as Hell" after our end of the recording did not record with Ricknas Sarn. He will also return in a future show (already recorded).

Ricknas Sarn (not his real name) is one of the hosts of "Free to Play" and has recorded a section about his "Project Endgrind" project which our producer (me) is currently trying to salvage.

Thanks for the compliments.

Julie

Aion:
The "scarf" version of cloaks are only for the asmodians. The Elyos have a full cloak/cape sorta thing. The asmodians have the scarf thing because of the back hair tail...

You can turn off the voice for system messages in the "audio" options.

The hotkeys in aion can be locked, just not in our version. There is a check box on the button bar that will let you do this in future.

Psychotherapy?
WoW as addictive as crack?
Isn't a doctor for ingame therapy for a person addicted to WoW a lot like a doctor going into a crackhouse and smoking crack with the addicted patient to try and cure them?

Champions Online:
I really don't see the difference in the items they plan to offer for the cryptic cash as EQ2 or WoW. Cosmetic changes appears to be all that is coming... well that and extra character slots.

As to the lifetime account only before September 1st being a bit strange. I tend to agree since most people won't even get to play the thing till then. That being said... I got the lifetime account already. Why? Well I LOVE CoH and I've managed to get into the CO beta so I know what the game is like.

TB musta been on tranquilizers on your show. He's normally a ranting loon! I've had to stop listening to him because that's all he seems to do lately.

Finally, you guys really don't have to split up the interviews to keep us listening ;)

Total biscuit is actually a very nice person - as you will hear in an upcoming show the way he acts on the "Blue Plz" show is for entertainment value...

...and he does entertain.

Celestian mentioned some of the things I was thinking of as you spoke about Aion. Also, you can turn off the filtering. That's what I do. I was freaking out at first too! Cause I couldn't say click... cause "lick" wasn't allowed. lol. I felt like I was playing Free Realms still. :)

The only time they wiped characters was beta one. Beta two through five, they didn't. I do believe they are wiping the characters before open beta because they are going to have us test the next patch. I'm excited about the patch, but I wish I didn't have to re-roll. Hopefully, their open beta isn't just weekends. :( That was painful. I had Aion withdrawals all week. It made me very unproductive.

I loved the show sisters. Good to see Scott on the show. Thanks for giving him a big head! lol. Next thing you know, he's going to roll around saying we should call him "Your Majesty". :P

Great conversation though. I definitely agree that experience is helpful. From my experience, I need more experience. Hehe. =) But everyone has to start somewhere.

Can't wait to hear the next show, ladies.

@ Luper:

Well now is your chance to hear the other half of the interview with Scott "His Majesty" Hartsman (note that epithet is our application of adoration and not his). It was our pleasure to give him a big head...

He deserves it.

Sometimes bleeping out expletives is better entertainment than leaving them in. :)

Greed has gotten completely out of hand. I have to agree with Fran's comment about vehicles. Do we have the technological expertise to create gas-free, pollution free cars? I'm sure we do.

I regard to Cryptic and all their crazy antics, I just read today that they sold out of lifetime subscriptions. Not at any point did they say a certain predetermined number of lifetime subs were available. The offer was supposed to be valid through Sept 1. Even then, how is it it possible to "sell out" of something that's not even manufactured or produced? Again greed. Obviously it's a scam to secure revenue before the game ships and get better retail placement though pre-order numbers, but allowing too many lifetime subscriptions would screw up the better revenue they'd receive charging for month to month subscriptions.

I liked Scott Hartsman's interview, and what he describes as emergent gameplay. I believe that games that are less "on-a-rail" and more sandbox oriented (like Eve Online, early Everquest, and early Ultima Online) offer way more opportunity for emergent gameplay. The equal and opposite reaction to this is more opportunity for what he calls deviant gameplay. However, I think developers sometimes become too overprotective, meaning they try to shield us from the deviant so much that they end up stifling our opportunities for emergent gameplay. I know I don't speak for everyone, but I'd be willing to put up with deviant activities in order to have more overall free and open gameplay.

Thanks for the fantastic show. I look forward to the next.

Yeah, sheer greed just plain pisses me off if you couldn't tell...lol

As for the Cryptic thing, they have reinstated the Subscriptions now until August 31st at 11:59pm. No limit this time. While I was on their side before, they have gained a great deal of respect from me for doing that for their customers. They did not have to, as they had already warned everyone there was a limited quantity they were going to sell. So, extra props to Cryptic for doing the right thing.

And I second the comment about the Scott Hartsman interview. I look forward to part two. Mr. Hartsman is a smart man who really knows his stuff, he deserves all of the praise he's been getting.

I don't get it. They announce no more lifetime subs, and then the very next day say, due to popular demand they'll offer it again. Now I'm starting to think this is a publicity stunt, especially seeing as there's really no reason on their end to run out of lifetime subscriptions in the first place. That's like someone saying, "I've run out of hugs and kisses. Yeah, I know I didn't tell you that I only have so many, but I really have run out. Wait! I've changed my mind. Since you've complained, and I want to be in your good graces, I will do the right thing and give you more hugs and kisses...even though I really did run out. Don't dispute me on how this is possible."

That even though I am cynical about Cryptic's motives, extending the subscription offers for Champions is still good news for those interested in the game.

@ Seritaph and JMO:

Well I would say that JMOs addition to the show was improved...humor wise...with all of the "bleeps" (which is why I made them audible instead of just cutting out the words.)

Scott Hartsman was indeed a very interesting host. The second part of the interview has been uploaded and hopefully it will be out soon - we will have Total Biscuit from Wow Radio on show 43.

As far as Cryptic is concerned, I hope what JMO said is correct as far as lifetime subscriptions is concerned. Was it a publicity stunt? Maybe. Lets try and think positive and think that the change Cryptic has made (if JMO is correct) is a matter of Cryptic listening to the community.

I'm hoping the next episode gets posted as well. When the front page gets updated, I think there may be a new show joining the collective...
