Good podcast and thanks for saying nice things about WDA. Good idea about us adding a section on how to get started in EO (I know it is rather daunting!), We probably won't do it for the next episode (We have somting rather speical planned instead) but with luck we will put it in the show after
Keep up the good work

With Cuppy's departure, everyone seemed lots more relaxed and the subject matter was much more serious this time, although I guess everyone was on best behaviour with Brent there:) I particularly liked the monkeys and SOE commenting, which was an interesting analogy. Having said that I think you took it a bit far by saying that SOE should be given lots of credit. It's quite easy for them to step in and take Vanguard on for a song - it's clearly a very good investment opportunity and ripe for them to make it into a real money-spinner. Ok that might not happen, but it's in their hands to do it and it's a hell of a lot cheaper for them, than starting a new game from scratch.
A female co-host would be good, but only if you can keep up the same level of content. This is certainly nothing to do with Cuppy, whose comments were usually insightful, but more to do with the witty repartie from the men when Cuppy was there, which was irritating.
Lastly, please no echoing, Darren...

The somewhat tongue in cheek title of the post was more about Auto Assault being killed the day after I posted a review, rather than Sci Fi being killed off, per se.
Interesting discussion though, and thinking about what I saw, it probably would have made a great console game yes :)
As for slumps, do what I do in such cases...go crazy on the 14 day trial circuit!
Off to hose down some monkeys...keep up the good work.

What other mmo podcast gives you monkey psychology tips?
Great discussion this week. With all the Betas available right now, there is no way this is a dry spell for MMOs.
No more Cuppycake, but we've got 2 new stars of the show... Johny-Jaffacake and Brenty-Biscuit
Looking forward to episode 5.

'Vanguard - it's clearly a very good investment' by Celestian
Submitted on 2007-07-09 16:28:10 CST
I'm sorry but I just can't agree with scytale2. VG is a good investment? I don't see it. Only people interested in playing EQ1 will be tempted till they see the system requirements. Nothing wrong with them picking up a cheap game that they can add to the All Access Pass but I don't foresee it EVER being a money maker, not a decent one at least.
Anyway, good episode but then I enjoy Brent ;) Do miss cuppy , fantasy all the way !

'WHO compared to VG' by Celestian
Submitted on 2007-07-09 17:09:56 CST
One thing I wanted to mention, when Brent said the "hype" for Warhammer is like that of "Vanguard". I dunno about that. Every game has the same amount of hype depending on your perspective. The group I hung around with was the same with wow and eq2, does that mean EQ2 will do as good as WoW?
Warhammer isn't getting the same sort of hype and it's "in game movies" are far better progress than VG has ever shown.
I just hate to see the stink of VG thrown at WHO.

Nice job guys.
Woot! Wilhelm's first cast! Hope you bring him back as that was some great discussion.
Its interesting to be on the same page with you guys and Dreamlords. I'd like to hear more about what you guys think of it as I do not have the time to play it and give it the chance I believe it deserves.
I'd hate to drudge this topic back up but I think that Ryzom is an excellent sandbox and I had some great times there. It really was a roleplayers world. In the beginning, nobody had any clue as to where the game was going and what the gods really stood for. Guilds were aligning with thier chosen god and some were choosing to not go with either. The in game events were awesome and really encouraged a ton of discourse between guilds and on the boards.
Id like to write more but this isnt the place for it. I hope you enjoy your time in Ryzom and I would like to hear your impression of the Ring system.
Also, Darren, I don't think you need a cohost. Maybe you could just stick with guests?
'what about Darkfall?' by hallower
Submitted on 2007-07-10 16:21:51 CST
I can understand why Darkfall wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea, but I'm surprised how rarely it gets mentioned in the blogosphere and podcasts. It seems to push MMO boundaries more than a lot of games more popularly mentioned.
Your podcast convinced me to take a swing at crafting systems in today's blog. Let me know what else I should address in Part 2.

I think Darkfall just fell off the map due to its developers keeping a tight lid on it and its development being stretched out for so long.
There's really just no information to work on at this point.
It's definately on my watch list, but as time goes on without any news I can only get more skeptical about its release.

I've played Sword of the New World. The first twenty or so levels are really fun, but eventually the Korean-ness of it begins to creep into the experience. And by the time your characters start hitting thirdy... I do have to admit that it's a step in the right direction, though; and the least boring grind I've ever had.
Also: on it not quite being an MMO; of course it's an MMO, but it isn't quite an RPG, which is what we expect most MMOs to be. I've always thought most Korean games had more for a mindless action feel. Sure, you gain levels, but you aren't really interacting with your character or a story, so all you're left with is some guy or gal on the screen, smashing away at some baddie or other.
And oh man, do I remember drinking the SOE hateraide. But this was back in 1999. And ironically, it was SWG that made me stop hating them. Sure, the game had problems, but it had some amazing points. And the problems weren't some great mystery, as the community was in the loop for a good portion of development. We got exactly what we expected, asked for, and pushed for. Nowadays I just hate EA (and Codemasters).
P.S. 14-day trial down on the Auto Assault website, so I had to go order a box. People. GoGamer. $10 for the Limited Edition. Join me. I want the door to hit NCsoft on AA's way out.
P.P.S. The problem with Darkfall isn't that it's an information void (which it is), but that the information that escapes isn't exactly reliable either. They've had many false beta starts? How long ago? No offense to the developers, cause Lord knows this game is everything I've been wanting, but I'll believe them when it's done.

Maybe I should apply to be a co-host... hmmm
