Listener Mail - We revisit avatars from show 47 and flesh it out a bit more...hopefully
Wrath of the Gods Interview - Randolph brings us through a "live"
interview like the ones he does on his website. Very fun section to do.
Thanks Randolph
'Coming Clean' by Anjin Submitted on 2009-06-04 19:09:50 CST Karen was very right. My reaction came from a conflation of the bunny ears issue with your avatar discussion in the last show. I'm glad you revisited the topic and greatly enjoyed the show!
'\o/' by FarSpace Submitted on 2009-06-05 02:40:03 CST I liked your guest Randolph, he had some good input and a good addition. he makes it much easier for me to understand things he asks questions and gets answers about.
Those interviews he does about those books and stuff on his website are really cool and informative, in-depth & interesting, that book "Mind Over Ship" seems so awesome and everything, I did not realize those books were so good and awesome sci-fi.
Cool fight story Karen was talking about too. Good times. And all these other stories Randolph got from everyone but I still want to know what game Karen would play if she could bring her guild with her. I wonder what game her guild would go to if EQ II shut down?
For me if LotRO shut down I would hope my guild went to maybe TOR.
P.S. when I was young I throgh a plastice cup over a bunch of pinball machines and got kicked out of the arcade, but they let me back in after a while because I was being good out side on the curb :)
'SOE' by Blacktop Submitted on 2009-06-05 17:57:03 CST I remember Smed saying , as long a game makes money, SOE won’t close it
Personally I think SOE is losing money on the matrix for a while
A lot of people left the game sins Tom that developer left
Unlike Planetside or Vangaurd, Matrix is a license game and the cost to maintain the game is rising quickly
'Female vs Male Avatars' by Yoh Submitted on 2009-06-07 00:19:22 CST As far as this topic is concerned, when looking for party members or whatever, I don't give a rats ass wether its a female or male avatar, but rather the personallity behind it, regardless wether that personality belongs to a male or female.
Can they do the job or can't they.
And this has been the case ever since I started playing MMO's, so it hasn't been a gradual process for me. But in saying that, I only started playing MMO's in 2005, with Guild Wars.
So to me, It may very well just be a maturity thing.... at least in part.
As far as my own avatar usage goes, I always play a female avatar. (and I'm male btw)
Not for perverted reasons, as some might speculate to be the case, but rather its because I'm an artist. And I use female avatars because they are more beautiful than male ones, as well they tend to have better looking armor, animatations and so on.
On the contray thou, then I look at male avatars, and I just see big, dumb looking gorillas. They just come across as dull and unintresting.
I much prefer beauty over brawn.
'Doomed SOE Titles' by Ardwulf Submitted on 2009-06-07 03:03:49 CST Great show as usual, although I was a bit distressed at the talk of Vanguard going away - and I think there's more to say on that subject than was mentioned.
'Males/Females' by Akely Submitted on 2009-06-07 07:38:50 CST I think that I do suffer a little bit from the chivalry bug. Almost always my first instinct is to treat female characters better than male. I tend to sink into the game and "be there". So it is only natural that I act a bit like I do in real life. And generally, in real life, I am more polite, kind and helpful to women. It's the way I was brought up. Deep down I guess sex also plays its role. But that is first instincts, any interaction with a player lasting more than that few first seconds always lasts long enough for the mind to be able to go "character is not player" and I end up with the more correct way of seeing things.
Then there are those few and far between times I do try to role-play my characters. Then I care not about the player at all and only act out based on the characters I do meet. But that almost never happens any more.
Weird fact: Our EQ2 guild is minute. Real tiny. And the only players - besides from the friends who started the guild - we've gotten to stay in the game are females. I guess we should ask ourselves why.
Vanguard:
I noticed on the SOE Launcher the other night that I have a free month of Vanguard. Can't be "returning player" because I have not ever played it. Must be a "please try" thing on SOEs behalf. I wonder if more people have the same thing and why SOE does that.
'Comments' by Seritaph Submitted on 2009-06-08 18:08:09 CST Vanguard. I was in beta, and bought the release, but I couldn't play it. Now I've upgraded my PC and have a renewed interest in it. In fact, it has pulled me in big time, and I see new characters on the trial island all the time. I hope Vanguard stays around as I believe it's improved greatly.
I tend to take things at face value as well. I'm not naive in thinking all female avatars are women, and male are men. But in general, I will make the assumption that a female avatar has a female player behind it, and same with males. In truth it doesn't matter because MMOs are the great equalizer in that anyone can be pretty much anything.
'More comments ^_^' by Luper Submitted on 2009-06-12 03:27:28 CST I still haven't played LOTRO yet! I need to do that some time. :)
As far as the matrix goes, I really wish they would just stop customer service, but continue allowing players to play the game. Unplugging a game is so harsh and heartbreaking.
Female vs male avatars is such a weird subject for me. I usually always play a female character. Well... because I'm female. Although, I have played a male character or two, but I feel so awkward. I always assume a female character is female and a male is male, but when I hear their voice on vent or ts, I usually always think of the person behind the character and not the chacracter. Although if I'm roleplaying, I will always speak to the characters as their in game gender.
My boyfriend on the otherhand loves playing female characters which freaks me out and it shouldn't, but it does! I guess it really doesn't matter because it's a fantasy world. I just think the reason behind playing the opposite sex's race is more alarming then actually doing so.
For instance...People who play female characters because they think they are going to get extra attention or gear is REALLY weird to me. Guys... why do you do that? lol. I've asked the guys I know IRL who do this, but the didn't give me a really good reason. It's creepy... mmkay.
The "Wrath of the Gods Interview" questions were priceless.
'Continued comments that didnt fit.. :( ' by Luper Submitted on 2009-06-12 03:28:04 CST I just recently started playing EQII because I only have time to play casually and I love it. I'll have to find you in game Karen. (Lillikira is the name). I agree... guildmates can really make a game more alluring. I love my guildmates in Vangaurd and it's so hard for me to not play with them, but I just don't have the time with work now. It sucks and was depressing for awhile.
