'Disdain for DLC Seems Illogical' by Teviko Submitted on 2010-02-05 16:52:42 CST Just heard your discussion about DLC and have to say that I'm a bit confused by your shared distain of it.
While I admit I am new to the whole console gaming and DLC genre, what I've seen and how I understand it works is that the original release is most of the time a complete game, on par with content and time investment found in games that may not offer DLC. However, for gamers who enjoyed the original game and want more, DLC is offered typically at a price of $5-$10 (but sometimes more) which gives the player new content and extends the life of the game. You are put off by this.
However, many of the MMO's you discuss may or may not require you to first buy the full game, then, to even be able to play it, you are required to pay a monthly fee, usually between $5-$15. For that fee you get little or no new content. When new content is offered the player is usually requried to pay more money for that in addition to their monthly fee. This you seem to accept.
Doesn't seem logical to me.
'Squee!' by Anjin Submitted on 2010-02-05 23:27:01 CST SUWT is back. Woo hoo! Time to rant about everything that I disagree with you about! :)
Really though, glad to have the podcast back.
'Sticky!' by Andrew Submitted on 2010-02-08 03:01:59 CST Thanks for fielding my question about "Sticky" games - I'd forgotten that I posed it so long ago. =)
Also, I'd like to hear your reply to Teviko, above - he makes a damned fine point, IMO. I've never had an issue with DLC for single player games, and feel the attitude taken to the show (i.e. that "they ship you an incomplete game so that they can force you to pay for the rest") is wrongheaded.
I don't buy DLC for every game I pick up, but if I like a game enough I'm happy to pay for more if the new content offers value for money.
'DLC' by darrenl Submitted on 2010-02-09 18:49:36 CST ...we'll certainly talk about it next show guys. Thanks for the suggestion

'WB' by Rik Submitted on 2010-02-23 03:22:28 CST So glad you guys are back - and playing STO! I'd taken a break from listening to podcasts - just as you'd taken to broadcasting them!
I think at times you definately need a break from the world of mmos - they can be all-consuming if you're not careful. Already breaking my own rule coming back to them by starting a podcast of my own though! Damn, we make rules, we break 'em.
Looking forward to many more Shut Ups (I'm currently exploring the Eridan Belt - working on captain and listening to show 57).
