'Nice' by Akely Submitted on 2010-09-13 18:01:44 CST It was nice to get some "new blood" in the show. Not that the old/returning guests is bad. It was just refreshing.
In my eyes the RPG element of MMO's is non-existent. a RPG for me requires the player(s) to play a role. This often requires lore and background in order to play that role. Not that it is a bad thing. Most RPG stuff is a multi-player environment is pretty useless anyway. Unless you're with like-minded people, I suppose. That can probably be very rewarding.
As for the upward spiral in games I see it as a personal game-killer. E've walked away from EQ2 in disgust much over that game mechanic that requires you to get gear to be able to do later quests/instances/missions. The game looses what I feel is the point, being there and experiencing stuff and turns into a goal-driven grind fest. I understand that some people really like the challenging type of game that theend game is in many MMO's. But it is not for me.
'MMORPG' by Teviko Submitted on 2010-09-14 17:13:23 CST MMORPG definition?
Who really cares and does it matter anyway? Does anyone form an opinion of a game based on its genre definition?
That being said, I had to chuckle at Jonathan. In one breath he’s saying WoW is not an RPG, then in the next he’s explaining WoW to his friend by describing the different “roles” each character has. Isn’t that one of the core aspects of an RPG? The player chooses or builds a specific character and the qualities of that character determine its role in the game compared to other characters. He is playing a specific role in the game, regardless of whether or not he actually takes on the mindset of the character or communicates in-game as that character.
'You Missed It...' by Xelous Submitted on 2010-09-15 15:34:55 CST Evening Tev,
Glad you liked my explaining to a friend about the character roles, but you seem to have missed that in three of the four classes pointed at I gave my friend the same answer, each one could damage, tank and heal.
This blending of the roles, this blurring of the role lines is very generous with some classes. And likewise very starkly absent in others. Can you imaging a mage being main tank? Can you imaging a rogue being healer?
Yet other classes can be a whole plethora of things.
That's a problem, that's the problem I was making fun of, and it lead us nicely from the one topic to the latter rant :)
Glad you enjoyed it all though :)
'Thanks, folks' by Cameron Submitted on 2010-09-15 15:48:20 CST I appreciate the shout-out. It's nice to be back. I hope my stuff continues to live up to the "firestorm" hype. (Somehow that's never seemed to be a problem for me...)
Thanks!
'MMORPG' by mmotreasurehunt Submitted on 2010-10-20 04:47:08 CST I was a little late listening to this one. I would like to add a few comments. For the RPG side I understand the points people are making about it being different for different people. For me it goes back to a character having a role in the quest or mission that other characters might not be able to perform. This goes back to the D&D days.
Now for the part about mmorpgs killing other games, mmos are what keep me gaming. I would like to add an idea that I do see or hear in this discussion. It deals with cheating. Being in the IT field I always hacked every PC game I got. So it got very boring to me to the point that after Tie Fighter I had all but stopped playing PC games and moved over to only console games, but then I got bored of them and basically stopped gaming altogether. Some friends of mine convinced me to try Everquest. That got me back into gaming in a big way. Now don't get me wrong, I did a few hacks in EQ, but they were mostly leveraging faction wars between NPCs for my benefit. Tomer the lost monk outside of Qeynos was my favorite pawn to start a faction war between NPCs that were not supposed to die. I digress, my point is since the data was on the server and the fact that I could be banned and lose my accounts I started just playing the game again and haven't stopped. Just something else to think about.
