Return to New Eden
Posted by WorldIV.com [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 22 February 2013, 12:48 am
I am slowly coming to realize that I play online games pretty much in complete sync with friends. As such, when a number of my friends began playing EVE (and redoubled interest from other friends who were already playing), it … Continue reading

7 Years, IV Worlds, 0 Game Developers
Posted by WorldIV.com [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 2 April 2013, 1:53 am
It’s hard to imagine that this blog has been kicking around for seven years. And yet, the very first blog post was published on April 10, 2006. In April of 2006, Vanguard hadn’t launched yet. SWG hadn’t closed. We wouldn’t … Continue reading

EVE: Nothing to report
Posted by WorldIV.com [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 10 May 2013, 2:47 am
I’ve spent a couple of months not doing a lot of active play in EVE; some shipping through high-sec and just a couple of brief dashes into wormhole space. (But that was fun, because it was my first trip to … Continue reading

Arduino Grows on Trees
Posted by WorldIV.com [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 12 November 2012, 2:35 am
I’ve been nursing a bit of a bug for a while to do something crafty, in addition to all of my other fast-fail software efforts. In so doing, I reawakened a silly thing I’ve wanted to try since college. For … Continue reading

The Tree is Done
Posted by WorldIV.com [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 20 November 2012, 2:24 am
A few more hours and a few more tribulations with the Arduino tree project yielded great success. As mentioned last time, I lookeed into building my own audio interface, but after a bit of snooping, found the SparkFun Spectrum Shield … Continue reading

Farewell, 2012
Posted by WorldIV.com [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 31 December 2012, 6:11 pm
It’s been a long, strange year. Like so many other bloggers, I’m now assessing how the last year went while looking toward the next. The result is, as usual, mixed and interesting. Games Strangely, this is the simple part this … Continue reading

Hello, 2013
Posted by WorldIV.com [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 27 January 2013, 11:49 pm
I ran my first half-marathon today. Well, run-walked. Gotta start somewhere… and that’s a great start for the year.

Failed Fast
Posted by WorldIV.com [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 10 October 2012, 7:00 am
I came up with a goofy idea that I thought could make a decent app. In furtherance of a typical modern, webby, agile agenda, I decided to “fail fast” and put together some barebones proof-of-concept to decide whether the idea … Continue reading

And Then, Everything Changed…
Posted by WorldIV.com [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 9 October 2012, 2:12 am
After a bit of wrangling, discussing, soul-searching, and whatever else goes along with these actions, your friendly WorldIV writers came to a conclusion. WorldIV had gone entirely out of date. It’s time to reroll! The Technology Perhaps this is self-serving, … Continue reading

The Summer of Dabbling
Posted by WorldIV.com [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 10 September 2012, 2:43 am
I didn’t really plan it this way, but I spent the summer dabbling in a number of games. This left me without much coherent or valuable to say about them — but when did that ever stop me, anyway? I began the summer as a fairly dedicated SWTOR player. Sure, it was WoW-with-buzzie-lightswords, but I [...]

Wherein the Author, Attempting to Promote Change, Becomes Unpopular
Posted by WorldIV.com [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 8 June 2012, 1:41 pm
I see some folks chattering about E3 booth babes and the effect they have on attitudes, perceptions, the roles of women in the industry, etc. This is a great conversation, so I’m jumping in by declaring that I presented game demos at E3 2011 and therefore award myself honorary status as a “bearded booth babe.” [...]

Scooped!
Posted by WorldIV.com [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 6 May 2012, 3:03 am
Believe it or not, I didn’t abandon my earlier stories of indy iOS work. I had a vision for my first iOS app of a program near and dear to my heart. You see, when I scanned for diabetes-tracking apps, I found the following scenario. Too expensive. Too many features. Too many clicks and taps [...]

Farewell, Vineyard
Posted by WorldIV.com [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 8 March 2012, 1:11 am
Sadly, Playdom has announced the closing of My Vineyard on Facebook. It’s particularly bittersweet for me, since I worked intensely on this game for its launch. It’s sad to see a project that I was so involved in close, of course; on the other hand, Vineyard ran for 24 months, which is pretty darned good [...]

SWTOR: 2 months in
Posted by WorldIV.com [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 23 February 2012, 2:27 am
Emi and I are still playing SWTOR quite regularly. We easily coasted our first characters up to level 50 and began dabbling in end-game content. For me, the winning combination at level 50 was to use Cybertech to craft a bunch of purple armor and mods, then jump into PvP to get the “low-hanging” fruit [...]

Star Wars Fans Rule!
Posted by WorldIV.com [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 23 January 2012, 8:31 pm
Star Wars Uncut – The Director’s Cut Star Wars Episode IV, cut into 15s chunks, re-filmed by fans and stitched back together. Brilliant. I only wish I’d clued into this project earlier and had the opportunity to submit a chunk. Hopefully, Lucas sees the value in supporting his fans in this. Were Lucas strong in [...]

SOPA on a Ropa
Posted by WorldIV.com [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 18 January 2012, 1:59 am
The US Congress is going to vote on SOPA/PIPA. Don’t just read about it. At the very least, go sign a petition. But I’m not going to shut down this site in protest, because inconveniencing 4 readers isn’t going to accomplish anything at all, while writing a brief essay will simply accomplish very little instead. [...]

Why, SWTOR, of course!
Posted by WorldIV.com [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 13 January 2012, 3:05 am
Where have I been since Christmas? It should be no surprise to most folks that I was an enormous SWG fan and a general Star Wars nerd, owning upwards of 20 books, all the movies, and at least 3/4 of the videogames released since Jedi Knight. Yes, I’m burning my spare time in a galaxy [...]

Happy Holidays
Posted by WorldIV.com [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 19 December 2011, 4:26 pm
No, I haven’t declared a “war on Christmas.” I just like the term “Happy Holidays” more. It flows. And I have a thing for alliteration anyway. Anyway, here’s a pre-holidays post with a couple of random internet grab bag items. Look, it’s a Cthulu-mas tree! Also, I dug through some of my music archives and [...]

Input
Posted by WorldIV.com [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 7 December 2011, 1:59 am
I’ve gone through quite a number of input devices over the years. At present, I use about 6 regularly. I’m more or less a Logitech fanboy, but that sort of loyalty tends to drift for me; at one point, I had more Microsoft input devices than a Kinect convention. I’ll stick with a brand while [...]

Life Gets in the Way
Posted by WorldIV.com [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 6 December 2011, 2:00 am
I swore I wasn’t going to write any kind of “sorry I haven’t been blogging” post. Turns out, I lied. Sorry I haven’t been blogging! Life and work got really busy for a while. I had an insanely busy summer and fall with the job, and somewhere in there decided to pretend I’m a grownup [...]

One Last Hurrah
Posted by WorldIV.com [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 14 July 2011, 2:56 pm
Old news … Star Wars Galaxies is closing on December 15th. I remember discussing the game with friends when it first launched. Some didn’t believe it could work – how could every player be the Jedi. For me, SWG wasn’t about being Luke, or Han. It was about engaging in the Star Wars universe. It [...]

The EVE Noble Exchange
Posted by WorldIV.com [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 27 June 2011, 10:30 am
I feel compelled to throw in my two cents on the current EVE stir. Disclaimer: I still rate EVE as the coolest game to talk about where my actual play generally consists of logging in to queue skills every few days. Microtransactions in videogames: Everyone is looking to increase profitability. I work in a freemium [...]

Corona Continued: Bad Particles
Posted by WorldIV.com [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 17 May 2011, 3:36 am
I’m going to want a particle system for my iOS games. It needs about 20 more options than I had a chance to build in my first standalone test, but I’m pleasantly surprised to see that nonoptimized Corona vectors have quite adequate performance. (Recorded on my PC this time, because I stumbled onto the fact [...]

Hello World, Corona Style
Posted by WorldIV.com [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 10 May 2011, 11:19 am
Today, I’m going to nerd out just a little on where I’ve started with my Corona-based iOS tinkering. Before I can leap into building out fully-featured apps or games, I have some basic things to resolve, like how to stand up an application architecture. Here’s how I did it, and here are my assumptions around [...]
