10.7: Use iCloud to automatically sync files across Macs
Posted by Mike J L dot com [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 31 January 2012, 3:58 pm
10.7: Use iCloud to automatically sync files across Macs: iCloud's 'Documents in the Cloud' doesn't let you do much except upload iWork files for use with iOS devices. To use those documents on another Mac, you have to download the file using the iCloud web interface.

Poking around in the ~/Library folder, you can find a 'Mobile Documents' folder that is used for syncing iWork documents. But it turns out you are not limited to iWork files if you just want to sync between Macs (i.e. no iOS use).

If you are using iCloud and have the 'Documents & Data' option selected in the preference pane, you can navigate to ~/Library/Mobile Documents. Depending on whether or not you've used iWork and synced documents to iCloud, you may or may not find folders there for each of the iWork applications (e.g. com~apple~numbers).

This doesn't really matter. What is of use is that any files put into the ~/Library/Mobile Documents folder will automatically upload to iCloud and push to any other Mac you have ...

Jumping into the Rift
Posted by MikeJL Blog - MMO [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 19 March 2011, 5:03 pm
I'm such the MMO junkie. So after some forum discussion with members in my guild (Casualties of WAR); and reading some overall good reviews. I deiced to jump into Rift and play some.

Busy with school stuff, however will try to play some this weekend.

Middle Earth Map

Very cool map of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle Earth. The labels are, where possible, in the Elvish language of Sindarin and the Tengwar alphabet:

Not specific to LOTRO however very handy and just fun to look at.

LOTRO Free To Play this Fall!

This is exciting news. LOTRO is going Free 2 play!

I always liked LOTRO however I'd take it in small amounts of play and found it hard to justify the monthly sub. This fall I'm heading back. I will purchase some Turbine Points ans an upgrade to bag slots and gold cap.

Details..

Summer MMO Wanderings
Posted by MikeJL Blog - MMO [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 2 June 2010, 5:38 pm
Got the itch to revisit Warhammer “WAR.” Got a “fair” priced for a 60 day time card; I think after the over billing debacle Warhammer time cards are a hot item. Still a few dollars cheaper than a OTC 60 day card.

I love to see how the game planed with the video card. If it makes AoC run nice, I expect WAR will look fantastic (turn on shadows .. WOOT!)

I look forward to getting back to my Choppa "Gorjaw"

and my

Witch Hunter "Gunwald"

With an extra 60 day AoC card ready to go and still one the one year STO sub I have plenty till WoW expansion.

New Life at 50

No not 50 years of age; level 50. In AoC when you hit level 50 you got a one time level 50 alt. With about 1 gold 50 silver (enough to purchase a mount) and a comparable set of gear.
So it finally happened; Vandoren, my Aquilonian Conqueror, hit level 50. DING!

So I created a Cimmerian Ranger , Thorngar.

New character and new expansion coming is pumping some fresh blood into AoC.

To Boldly MMO Where I have Not in some time
Posted by MikeJL Blog - MMO [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 18 January 2010, 4:00 am
My MMO seems to revolve around fantasy (swords, magic, orcs, elves, etc). However years ago I was in the launch of Star Wars Galizies (SWG); and played for sometime.
Since I left SWG its been back to fantasy; EQ2, WoW, Vanguard, Lord of the Rings Online, Warhammer Online and Age of Conan. Fantasy is still my number one genre. Still love my sci-fi so...

I just dropped the pre-order bomb with Amazon.com for Star Track Online (STO). I'v been following open beta reviews and video and its looking good.

While I wait for Feb 2nd .. I 'll try to get into STO open beta. WoW runs out January 26th (I may get a time card later for WoW) I'm also still playing LOTRO till April and have a few weeks of EVE Online free trial. EVE is pretty fun; however I think STO is more up my alley.

So set your phasers to fun and engage..

Star Trek The Open Beta
Posted by MikeJL Blog - MMO [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 20 January 2010, 12:33 pm

I’m in STO open beta. I only had an hour or so to play (had to teach a class last night). Still, after install and quick patch I spend lots of time in the character creation. Very nice! I never played Champions Online however read about the depth of making a character in that game. It seems this depth of creation also exists in STO.

I did make Grimgar; the first know race called the Orks (i.e. Orcs) in the Federation. Only option I did not find was tusks; still had a cool looking big green ensign (now Captain of the USS Thrallis).

The client ran well and graphics looked great (these are some web images.. I'll keybind a screen shot key):

The sound effect were better than I expected. Especially the sounds (red alert, phasers, transporter, etc.) all really sound like the movies and shows.

Finished the tutorial missions and ended up at the star base at Earth. Game options (graphs, UI, etc) all good so far. The space combat if fun (you have the ability to divert power from the fours systems (shields, weapons, engines and auxiliary). It has presets and the ability to setup you own saved settings. Ground combat was also fun. It’s not FPS still .. MMO feel (which I like).

I’ll wrap up with first hour was a good experience.

Beta update: 1/22/10

Few days and mission behind me.

Space combat and ground are both fun. In space combat I diverted power to shields in one battle. Used a new “evasive maneuvers” skill and have to think about ship position and shields.

Ground combat. Some don’t like ground however I do enjoy it. Also fun and lots of move & fire. Rolling out of melee range, stuns etc. It’s more fun than I initially expected.
Having NPC bridge officers is very cool. You train and promote them.

The missions I have done so far were not all based around combat. One was to get details about disputes of a mining colony. Find and assist a lost frigate in space was another.

Good graphics and sounds (looks and sounds great so far)

UI is good. Few areas could be refined however no major issue so far.

Few disconnects (expected). I do have a Vulcan character who went into a new sector (to try some exploration missions) and got immediately disconnected when I entered the sector. And on every log in (on that character) get disconnect few seconds after. Was some server maintenance shortly after so hope it gets cleared up.
Logged a buy where transaction form ground to ship (and vice versa) take few seconds to change. So I end up on the planet as a ship and in space without a ship. This hopefully gets cleared up.

I like to see the ability to be on my bridge in space. Even do mission on my ship. Be able to walk around my ship (at least a few decks). I recall doing this in SWG (on the veteran reward ship). So I know it’s possible.
Play little more next week till early access starts.

Now .. what to roll when games goes live. hmmm

Beta Update: 1/24/10

Patches have improved the game. Here are a few screen shots (I sized then down to 800x600):

Did the "roll your own" race and did the first space Orc. Grimgar. Here he is on the bridge of the USS Thrallis.

My ship the. You can name your own. very cool

Taking some fire from a Klingon.

Returning fire.

And yes.. you can play a Klingon. Rolled this guy today.

10/27/10

Open Beta ended Tuesday. Was busy teaching so played little Monday night. STO looks very promising and was more fun than I expected. I'm pre-ordered from Amazon and Look forward to head start weekend and starting my journey in STO. Vulcan Engineer Officer in charge of a Federation Science / Exploration vessel. (well later after the he makes Lt. Cmdr.

Engage!
Posted by MikeJL Blog - MMO [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 4 February 2010, 2:27 am

Set destination for STO launch .. warp 9 ..

Actually early access launch. I rerolled my "space ork (i.e. green orc)" Grimgar G Boson.. Engineer. Love the Engineer class .. lots of toys on ground; like shields generators. I had a few screen shots however when Tuesday the 2nd arrived I uninstalled the beta client and reinstalled the release version from my Amazon order and it deleted all my screen shots. Not a big deal as it was the same stuff in my last post (open beta screen shots).

I hit (level 11) Lt. Commander and was assigned a new ship. I choose the federation cruiser as its an all around great ship and seems like an engineers ship with the extra bridge station and lots of aux power.

So after going playing few days on head start and day of so after official release .. here is Lt. Cmdr Grimgar Boson.

Lt Cmdr on the bridge.

And the new ship .. the USS Aries:

Another bridge pic:

And to celebrate took a trip out to the Risa system (the vacation area in Star Trek) for little R and R:

Then took it out for a spin on some Orion raiders. With 2x engineering bridge officers and the the addition of the aft photon torp (nice!) .. this feels like a great ship for combat. Also for exploration and research. Look forward to a fun journey to full commander. No hurry .. lots to go see and do.

ENGAGE!

I need a bigger STO garage
Posted by MikeJL Blog - MMO [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 5 February 2010, 12:14 pm
.. to hold my ships.
Having an extra an abundance of credits and points to get addition science bridge officer; I picked up a science vessel.
So I commissioned the U.S.S. Magellan.

Took it out for a quick trip (to the Delta Vouranus Cluster) and was having fun with the abilities it has (like targeting enemy sub systems; and the other abilities from the extra science officer). Admittedly the Orion smuggles I encountered were lower level so I’ll take out the Magellan to equal level areas see how it does.

Science or Cruisers .. it’s nice to have choices. Just parking could be a problem.

Torn between Two Ships
Posted by MikeJL Blog - MMO [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 16 February 2010, 6:59 pm
Promoted to Commander this weekend. (i.e. level 21). And giving a new ship assignment .I choose a heavy crusier:

From the wiki

"Despite their slow maneuverability, Cruisers have Advanced Warp cores, and with the extra power produced are capable of withstanding large amounts of damage, extending their shields to nearby damaged vessels, and equiping multiple phaser arrays to in their bow and aft equipment bays. These vessels also have large cargo holds making them ideal for moving equipment or personnel on long journeys."

Here is the USS Argonaut (in route to take on the "Domesday machine") I need to get some better pics of the ship.

Then the smaller choice of my a Research Science Vessel (RSV)

From the wiki
The Science vessel is perhaps the most versatile and useful ship found on the front lines of combat, and can be configured to support other vessels in a variety of different ways. The Science vessel shines when it comes to scientific research and application with the majority of the Bridge Officer stations focussed to Science personnel. Captains with a deep understanding of Scientific research and theory will find themselves and their vessels sought on the battlefield for the multitude of tasks they are able to perform.

Although Science vessels are not the most powerful, indeed some may see them as the most vunerable, they are not unarmed and can still be formidable vessels.

Here is the USS Equinox (I went ahead and purchased the ship):

Both offer different combat tactics. I play science all through Lt Cmdr and love it. However, I'm starting to lean too the cruiser. It can take a beating however the tactics of moving your weak shields out of harms way is not always the best (as the cruiser flys like the large ship it is). I found I also need to direct power to certain shields as well as plan ahead on maneuvering.

I read up on a cleaver tactic to use .. move into range above the target then open up a broadside. Make maneuvering a pain as you cannot fly straight up in STO so the elevation put you at an advantage.

So again .. I gain a rank and end up with two ships. Parking is becoming a problem.

Number One .. go park the RSV. Were taken the cruiser out for now.

The Crew
Posted by MikeJL Blog - MMO [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 18 February 2010, 5:01 pm

Noticed a few other players have done this. So few screen shots, Windows Paint and 20 min I put together a montage of the ship and crew:

I picked my top key bridge officers and game them specific uniforms (rest of crew has standard TNG look). I still have a few Ensign rank officers; and a few Lt rank officers. One a liberated Borg as Lt. Engineer Bridge Officer and on my away team and a Vulcan science officer (gota have a Vulcan science officer).

This really brings a personal depth to the game.

I also ran across a Wiki site at www.stogeek.com that payers are making their own wiki pages.

Very cool
Some notes on skills I plan:
I'm going to dump Boarding party for Aceton Field 1. BP was too circumstantial and unsure how often I've seen it work. I might get it later with the Galaxy cruiser

I like to have my Eng BOff skills beef up survivability. Here is a plan:

At Captain (when I pickup my Galaxy) I may go with this:

Equipment changes also..

I got rid of the mines on my Heavy Cruiser and went with an additional beam. I really was an improvement. I might replace a forward plasma beam I have with a phaser. 4x phasers 2x torp. Need to upgrade the EPS console (have a +1 right now) as the extra phaser bank draws more power.

He said Captain I said what ...
Posted by MikeJL Blog - MMO [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 1 March 2010, 1:16 pm
Achieved capitan this weekend and finally got into the exploration class cruiser. This class is similar to Enterprise from TNG; however, the new ship is mix of Galaxy, Envoy and Celestial class parts.
Here is the USS Earl Gray:

Also I dished out several promotions to the crew. Especially the Bridge Officers (all commander rank) and my science officer is officially named Doctor now. Here is the latest crew ...

I did not post Cmdr. Eighteen. A liberated Borg (from the Amazon pre-order); she is an engineer and givers a +5 to all system (she is like my Data of my bridge crew).

The new command moves me from the Romulan front to DS9 and Cardasian space.

What the EVE?
Posted by MikeJL Blog - MMO [HTML][XML][PERM][FULL] on 16 April 2010, 7:11 pm
For a person who loves Fantasy and PvE game play; I find it strange I subbed to EVE Online. Also this is the first where SciFi MMOs outnumber fantasy. I guess I love the variety.
Having co-workers who play EVE was a huge influence. One got me the 21 days trial (that is now a subbed account). I’m still focusing on PvE as the death penalty is steep over any other MMO I have played. However it’s this risk, extreme depth, the huge size of the game space and the sandbox feel that had drawn me in for now.

Guess I have MMO ADD and things will change when WoW Cataclysm arrives.

Think why EVE has hooked me. It's the journey of it. I never been an "end-game" player in my MMOs. Did years ago in WoW (pre BC) however my life as a "raider" was short. Even now in STO I don't find and game appealing and as I hit Admiral I already have plans for other alts.

I find I enjoy the journey and adventure that comes with the progression in a game. EVE really seems about that. No rush to end game.

Conan: To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women ..
Me: and 60 days of play for the cost of 30!

Got me a cheap 60 day Age of Conan time card. And heading out to Hyboria again. This time armed with a video card upgrade. Got a 9800GT 1GB few months ago and look forward to better graphics and smother performance.

Also .. Vandoren my 48 Conqueror is close to 50. And at 50 you get a one time alt also at level 50. I'm thinking Cimmerian Ranger. And to top it off I pre-ordered of the AoC expansion "Rise of the Godsalyer" that should arrive May 11th.

So poor me some ale and fetch me a wench.

then I'm off to bash some skulls.

Update (4/27/10) - BY CROM! new video card makes world of difference! I click "High" for graphics setting and get great FPS so far. And even get .. shadows! Game looks fantastic and played smooth. Did some combat in Fields of the Dead (to relearn how to swing a sword .. then headed to Old Tarantia Market (i.e. auction house) and FPS dropped into the 30's. Before with older AoC code and 8600GT I was lucky to get 20 FPS anywhere.

So off to a great start.
