What’s Next for PlanetSide2?

We had a chance to listen to Matt Higby and Tramell Isaac expound on some of what they've been working on over the last couple months with PlanetSide 2, and what we should expect to see in the next several months with the game. When they led with new loading screen art, I started to get worried. Needlessly, as it turns out.

The Future of EverQuest II

One might think, given that Sony Online Entertainment is actively building EverQuest Next in the form of Landmark, that the two elder EQ games would be going on cruise control as SOE shifts assets to focus on the new shinies. This statement could not be any further than the truth.

Things Are About to Get Even More Interesting

Landmark is a game that was born of a need for Sony Online Entertainment to begin work on EverQuest Next and still be able to involve their players. With it, SOE hoped to achieve a bedrock of community that would bridge both games and allow them to give players unprecedented access to the development process. At SOE Live, Dave Georgeson, Director of Development for Landmark and EverQuest Next, spoke at great length as to what was in store for SOE's building game.

Seven Years in Telon: An Analysis of Vanguard

Sony Online Entertainment's traditional high fantasy MMORPG represented to me an online world that had a tremendous amount of potential, but without the modernization and implementation required to compete in today's saturated market. Over the years MMOs have become well-known for lots of different things. Endless hours of grinding, epic battles on a massive scale, and deeply immersive worlds immediately come to mind. By nature of the inherent design and network challenges associated with persistent online worlds, it's difficult to create User-Generated content systems that actually work well.

Free to Play, ArcheAge, and LoL - Is Riot’s Model Better?

Last time around, I discussed free to play and so-called entitlement in the MMO community. While I do think that some are called out or made to feel guilty for simply enjoying what developers and publishers are putting out, that could've perhaps been a narrower discussion. Again, this time around, payment models get another look, and it's in part due to some recent topics that have come up in both the greater gaming community and among MMO players.
