Question of the Day: What is Depth?

Prompted by some recent reviews of Tabula Rasa, and specifically this post and associated comments over at the Ancient Gaming Noob.

What do we specifically mean when we say any game, and particularly an MMO, lacks “depth”?  I know that we are indicating that we don’t see a lot of opportunity for/interest in long-term play, but what elements are we looking for when we say that?  Do we have any objective basis for that, or is it more of an intuitive assessment?

Are we looking for narrative depth, a story or set of stories to explore?

Are we looking for gameplay depth, game mechanics which encourage meaningful decision-making?

Are we looking for depth of community, tools and personalities around which we feel interesting social groups will form?

I’m interested in collecting points of view, here… let me know what your feelings are, what “depth” typically means to you…
