A Place to Call Home

SWG CityI was chatting with an old friend from World of Warcraft a few days ago, catching up on each other’s past, present and future MMOs, and he mentioned that he used a “free weekend” offer from SOE to get ingame and pay upkeep on his house in Star Wars Galaxies. And he says, “I don’t know why I care, either. The fact that I’m trying to maintain a virtual house in a game that I don’t play anymore says something about my mental state, I think.” We-ell, I hate to admit it but I’ve been trying to keep my little outpost alive in SWG. Since I don’t play the game anymore either, I know that someday, the little fortune I had accumulated is going to run out and those houses and fountains and gardens and statues will disappear in a puff of smoke. But until then, I have a virtual place to call home.

I know I’ve said this before but I’ll say it again: game developers really ought to take a look at what SWG did right.
